Didn't see a thread on this yesterday, but it deserves our respect.

35 years ago yesterday, those 20 guys did the impossible.

Saturday, the team gathered in Lake Placid to hang recently deceased Defenseman Bob Suter's jersey to the rafters.

It is hands down the greatest upset in sports history. Those Soviet teams were an unstoppable force.

The original 'miracle on ice' was in 1960. It may well have been a bigger upset, and it made Olympic hockey something U.S. fans could care about.

Not knocking the 1980 team; it was truly amazing. But a lot of people don't have any idea that the hockey team had done much the same thing 20 years earlier.

While you may be right, there is no denying that the Soviet Union was at their peak in the 60s through the 80s.

The soviets were not dominant like that prior to 1960. They had only won 1 gold prior to Squaw Valley

Yeah, I'm not trying to compare the two directly -- saying this one is better than that one -- just saying the 1960 team deserves not to be forgotten. At the time, it was a really big deal.

It was great, but pulling Tretiak from goal after the first period was maybe the worst hockey coaching decision ever.

No doubt.

That last Mark Johnson goal right at the end of the first period was entirely Fetisov/Kasatonov's fault. Complete letdown on defense

The 30 for 30 that talks about this game from the Soviet point of view was a fantastic piece for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

The impact of that win still echoes today. Just look at the number of kids playing hockey in the U.S. now, the growth of junior and college hockey in the U.S., the number of Americans in the NHL today, and the expansion of the NHL into non-traditional markets across the southern U.S. None of that happens without the Miracle on Ice.
