This was one of the best 30 for 30's I have seen. I have been a fan of Jimmy V for a while, and take every opportunity to watch the Espy's speech when I need to hear something inspirational. This guy was so amazing at lifting people up. That grey haired guy who played on his team said it best when he said "he took kids from here at brought them here" meaning he took them from a lower level and took them to a higher level just by talking to them. And they were ready to run through walls for him. Makes me wish i had a coach like that. Just listening to Valvano makes me want to run through a wall for him and he's dead now. I can't imagine being in a locker room with a coach like that.

Most improbable run ever to win a championship in any sport. More incredible than the USA Hockey Team, Jack Nicholaus Masters win in 86 and Villanova's NCAA Basketball Run.

It seemed like they were down by 5 or 7 points with under 2 minutes remaining every game.

I wasn't alive in '83, but my uncle is a huge NCSU fan to this day, and he credits the '83 team being the reason why.

This documentary was by far the best 30 for 30 I've seen.

Yeah that was a big theme for them it seemed. Made the team of destiny label stick to them because of the way they pulled out improbably wins during that run. Every time they put someone on the free throw line, I kept hearing Mark Jackson describing John Starks' free throws in the winning time. "He wanted no part of those free throws" I kept hearing that in my head over and over when NC State put those guys on the line. Especially that freshman. It was awesome.

2. What happened the last 10-15 min? I turned it off shortly after Lorenzo Charles' winner.

the last 10 to 15 minutes was the real tear jerking stuff .. they showed the 10-year reunion of that team in 1993 at an NC State home game, just before Valvano died .. it showed him greeting all of his players .. at the end, Wittenberg standing alone, in the dark gym, with tears running down his face remembering Coach V in silence was just incredibly powerful .. at the restaurant, all the guys toasted Lorenzo Charles, who, as you know, was killed in 2011 in a bus accident ... and they also talked about Valvano's issues with the NCAA and the subsequent two-year probation that the program was placed on ... Valvano was later cleared completely by the NCAA ..

I thought they could have done without this. Adding that part in the middle of that tear-jerker ending was the only thing that kept me from going full

Incredible though. Will watch again. And again.

Well .. there is still a faction of people out there that remember Valvano as a "cheater" that got his program put on probation and had to resign in disgrace just as much as they do for the championship run and the ESPYs speech .. it is sad, but just true .. i really think they touched on that to make a point to remind people that the NCAA cleared Coach V of all wrong doing .. i think it was more of a name clearing than anything ..

Yeah and having the Lead NCAA investigator on to say he'd send his kid to whatever team Valvano was coaching was icing on the cake. I really wonder why anyone disliked Valvano that much to try and kill that program and try to ruin his reputation. He seemed like a guy who generally cared about everyone he met.

and considering the executive producer of the film was dereck whittenberg himself, i highly doubt including that portion of Coach V's story had any malicious intent at all ... i just think whittenberg very astutely realized that there are a lot of people that still have questions about how valvano's coaching career came to an abrupt end ..

Could it be shopped? There's no first name or dates on the headstone.

That is the front of the headstone, but the text looks weird on Lorenzo.

it might be legit. The valvano behind Lorenzo looks like it is the back of jimmy vs. From the first pic it looks like jimmy's is elevated a little......that looks to be the case in the second one too.

I stand corrected..... From Wiki "Lorenzo Charles is interred at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, in the same section of the cemetery with the late Jim Valvano, his coach at North Carolina State.[6]"
