I love Jonathan Abrams work on Grantland and he's put together another nice one on one of the most exciting duos in NBA history. Very long read so clear some time on the schedule:

And a long highlight reel of the Penny and Shaq duo for more entertainment:

A lot of people thought they would be a dynasty being in Florida with Shaq and Penny. But not being on a coast and Shaq's ambitions hurt that.

I am glad Shaq left for LA though. He was too big for Orlando.

Damn, what a wasted lineup.

Hardaway
Anderson
Scott
Grant
O'Neal

Watching Sunshine Network games with Ckip Caray and Jack Givens was how I spent a lot of evenings in the late 90's. That was a fun team to watch.

I blame Anderson for missing those FTs in game 1 against the Rockets.

This reminds me of the ridiculous playground arguments we'd have when I was about 8.

Who would win 1 on 1, Jordan or Shaq?

Been a Magic fan since they came into the league. Penny is my favorite player of all time. Was in the arena when Scott Skiles had 30 assists against the Nuggets. Both teams were awful that year and that was the funnest NBA game I have ever attended.

That was one of my first basketball memories. I remember sitting down, by myself , at 5 years old watching that ENTIRE game. I can still lividly remember him missing those 4 FTs and thinking "damn, that's not good "

Man, I'm reading it now and there's some GOLD in there. The quote about the Magic being snowed in and Marilyn Manson made me chuckle.

And reading about Michael coming back after they lost to Orlando the year before

GOAT

ETA: Shaq on free agency when he left Orlando:

quote:

They didn’t match quick enough. Forget matching. You’ve got to make the offer at the beginning. Everyone knows I wanted to stay. My house is 80,000 freaking square feet. You think I wanted to just leave that thing? Eighty thousand. It ain’t like I was planning to go.

Just damn.

Such a good article. I remember growing up with this team and loving them. I was so confused how they disappeared so quickly. Them and the 2000 Kings are the biggest examples to me of the best teams with the most promise. The article also shows just how great Michael Jordan was. Every team in the league was legit scared when he came back and knew they had a two year window
I find it funny that the reason the Kings with Webber never won it all is due to Shaq who should've been with the Magic all along if their owner was competent
