Honestly, this should just be removed from the Olympics. No other sport has this level of PED failures. Either that, or ban every country for 4 years if they have more than 3 failed tests in major competition the same year (continental, world, and Olympic championships).

The countries are the usual suspects, China and former Soviet Republics. 3 from China, 2 from Belarus, 2 from Russia, 2 from Kazakhstan, and 2 from Ukraine. Also 2 weightlifters from Kazakhstan and Belarus who won 2012 medals are banned with updated tests, four non-medalists.

Earlier in the summer, 10 weightlifters were suspended, including 5 medalists from Beijing.

So we already have more than a third of all weightlifting medalists from Beijing who failed tests, not to mention the ones who evaded it so far or successfully microdosed.

Complete shitshow.

You have a link?

I find it weird we only sent ONE male olympic weightlifter in any weight class to the Olympics in Louisiana's own Kendrick Farris. I'm guessing this has something to do with it.

LINK

The US sent three skinny Crossfit girls, a morbidly obese woman who has failed PED tests before but got a bronze, and on the men's side, Kendrick Farris.

I think they've basically given up on competing bc of how dirty it is. Also worth noting, Bulgaria and Russia were banned this time around. China has consistently led the pack the past 3-4 Olympics, and it is one of their strongest sports, alongside ping pong, badmintion, shooting, and diving.

Not weightlifting?! Next, you'll tell me that Olympic boxing had a judging controversy.

Or just accept that fact that every athlete you see on stage is on PED's, therefore making it a level playing field? You seriously want to remove it from the Olympics because of PED's? What about track? You want to remove track too?

It's not really a conscious decision by the USOC to withhold American athletes from competition. The fact is that America has lagged behind in Olympic weightlifting for quite some time.

Drugs aren't the sole reason why. American athletes have greater financial incentives for pursuing other "big name" sports.

Our best athletes are simply no longer pursuing the sport. Oddly enough, America has several current world record holders in the IPF.

I would be curious what the potential success rate would be if these elite powerlifters attempted to make the transition to Olympic weightlifting. I don't mean to disrespect individuals who practice Olympic weightlifting for 10+ years or imply that the sport is easy to pick up, because it's not. But perhaps it's worth attempting to appeal to some of these junior lifters who aren't yet fully ingrained in powerlifting, have the requisite strength and athletic base, and are young enough to establish the requisite technique for the sport and build upon it.

What's more surprising is they actually test for weightlifting...I assumed everyone just looked the other way so it could be an actual sport.

This is like being outraged that body-building has a major steroid problem.

Just make it legal

Even if roids were okay those same countries would still win if the team isn't banned

If we want to win then we play their game all the way. not just use roids.

THey do due to advancements in testing technology. Where is the IOC vault of these samples though is what I'm wondering.

No sport is close to weightlifting when it comes to the number of failed tests.

At this point, it's probably best to radically reform a sport that is so far beyond clean that it practically requires a needle and a shady doctor or GNC manager who views himself as a hustler.

Baloo, that's what I'm saying. If I was in charge, I would take weightlifting and boxing off the list of sports. Show other federations that you're not fricking around.

Why do you assume that if there aren't failed tests then a sport is clean? Crossfit has no failed tests from all of top level athletes, but do you think most if any are clean? Why do you care if it's clean or not? What about NFL football? You think those guys are clean? I will never understand everyone's obsession with PED's.

Or just quit testing for PED's. It's an illusion anyway.
