Don't be that guy.

ETA: If you don't die quickly, usually premiums paid exceed benefits received. Sell life insurance to healthy people. Provide a positive return on their premiums to their beneficiaries.

Virtually the same thing. The en vogue marketing term is Final Expense.

If you get it, make sure others know. We just buried the wife's grandmother. Came to our house on hospice and then passed. She had a small policy in my wife's name we knew about to cover most of the expense, but we still incurred a decent cost. About two weeks after the burial, we find out she had bought some policy through another funeral home in town that would have covered everything easily, but it was some junk that was only good through them.

About three months ago, my grandfather asked me to be the executor for their estate when they finally pass. About a month ago I went to their house on a Saturday morning and we went through where he keeps all the important papers, insurance policies, etc. Went through all the plans.

Couple of years ago a relative passed and we knew she had some "burial insurance" but didn't know what all was involved as she never told us the details. Went and talked to the funeral home where everything was "pre-arranged" and were basically told, hey, she got the policy 20 years ago when the cost of a funeral she chose was X, and she prepaid it. However, they were only giving us the money she paid, plus like 3 percent a year in interest, to go towards the actual today cost of the funeral, which for what she agreed to, cost a heck of a lot more than the 3 percent growth. i.e. we would have to come up with like $2,000 to get all the same stuff.

After I had some choice words for the manager and threatened to call WWLTV as well as the state regulators on them, they changed their tune and decided there was no additional money due.

I hope the industry is better now.

Security Plan and Union National can burn in hell. It's just up to good agents to educate people how predatory those companies actually are. Unfortunately those debit companies (weekly/monthly cash collectors) serve a low income segment of the market. Those are the folks who can least afford to get screwed. It's sad. But hey, EJ Ourso is a philanthropic gentleman right?

Our wonderful legislature sold out the public and helped out the industry several years back. As I recall the old policies were allowed to get away with $500 as a result. Original policies covered total cost. I am sure the donations/hookers were many.
