I'll try to be brief. I'm planning a trip to Spain September 2017 with my wife. Would it be wise to open up a credit card to try and cut the flight price? I'm likely flying delta. I don't have any credit cards under my name, my wife has one. I have an excellent credit score and if there are any bonus rewards for spending $XX amount I could easily swing that with the vacation I'm paying for.

Is it wise to do and if so, what would be the best card to do it with?

Thanks for the heads up on the site. It's pretty legit, although it may be to difficult for me to sift through to figure out exactly what I need/should do.

If you want quick points either AMex Plat or Chase Sapphire Reserve. Both offer 100k bonus after min spend and also have travel credits. CSR has a $300 credit for travel that auto credits your account after you spend. Both have high annual fees though. CSR is 450, not sure what amex plat is. Amex plat offers 5x pts for flights and CSR offers 3x points for travel including hotels uber flights etc. Just do some research on both. One of these cards is likely your best bet.

I read about one guy applying for high fee cards with travel credit. There is some law not allowing fees to be charged if the card has below a certain limit (2 or 4k maybe). Get approved for card, immediately call and ask for a reduction of limit. Hit minimum spend. I dont remember if they automatically refunded him, or if he had to call. Do some research, or when I have some free time I'll try and find out more and update this.

How much money do you spend each month? I am pretty good with this and can help you.

ETA: How much can you put on credit cards.

You are perfect positioned to do this entire trip for whatever you want it to be on a sliding scale of full price to free. Just depends on how many cards you are comfortable with. I’ll start by saying that applying for cards will only affect your score in the very short run (2-4 months) and if you are good about making all your payments, it will pass your current credit score for the better.
Assuming you are comfortable with applying for multiple cards, here is the strategy I’d suggest.

Now:

Your wife:
1) Chase Sapphire Reserve (100K UR points, $450 fee, $600 travel credit)
2) Chase Ink Preferred (80K UR points, $95 fee)
You:
1) Chase Freedom (15K UR points). This is because you don’t have any other cards and this is a good starter card. Hard to get approved for anything else at the moment.
Once you meet minimum spending on each, you are at over 200K UR points. Flights to Spain in Economy will be 120K total round trip with United points (UR partner). And you can add in another destination for free within Europe. Book flights now.

3 months from now:

Wife:
1) Chase Hyatt (2 free nights at any hyatt in the world, $75 fee, 1 free night a year)
2) Chase United (50K united points)
You:
1) Chase SW Plus (50K SW)
2) Chase SW Premier (50K SW)
Doesn’t help for Spain trip but At 110K SW points, you can designate a companion (your wife hopefully) and you get free flights on SW for 2 years.

6 months from now:

Wife:
1) Chase Marriott (upto 100K points)
2) Citi Hilton Reserve (2 free nights)
You:
1) Chase Sapphire Reserve (100K)
2) Chase Ink Preferred (80K)

Now you have 315K UR leftover to use @ 1.5c per point towards hotels (or another trip), $1,200 in travel credit from 2 Sapphire reserve cards for AirBnB and stuff, 100K Marriott for Marriott Hotels, 2 Hyatt Free nights to use at the Park Hyatt Mallorca if you want to add that free leg on United and 2 Hilton nights.
If you want to keep going, at 9 months add hotel cards like Chase IHG, AmEx Hilton, Citi Hilton etc.

Tweak it as you wish. The reason I suggest 2 cards at once is because Chase will combine credit inquires made on the same day into 1. Good for your score. Suggesting Chase cards first because these are the best cards to get and Chase won't give you their best cards once you have over 5 new accounts within 2 years. 3 month intervals because it gives enough time for your credit score to bounce back.

You could also switch your wife's United app to now instead of Ink Business preferred and apply for the Ink in 3 months. This will free up 50K UR as you will just be using UA miles instead.

If you want to go all out on this one, you will have enough miles to fly in First class (like on Lufthansa).

Finally - I would totally disregard AmEx plat suggestions, with due respect.

Wow, I'm impressed.

Chase would hand out 5 different affinity branded cards in a 6 month period? I'm stunned by that.

Ofcourse. I've had 10 under a year.

Btw - it is much easier to get co-branded cards than cards that earn bank points. I heart bank points.

What's the long term plan with all these cards ? Keep them open? Close them ? I'm just getting started with all this and not sure about this part. Thx

Reassess ever year. Does paying the AF make sense for you? If yes, keep it. If not, close it. For example with CSR you gotta be able to justify the $150 incremental fee. Is the lounge benefit worth it? Extra point? 25% increased redemption rate?

With Hyatt, you get a free night every year so it's worth it for $75.

Can you still upgrade the cash back from freedom unlimited to UR if you get the CSP?

Couple of options. You can close them if you want to try and repeat the sign on bonuses again one day down the road. Some cards purge records every couple of years and you can repeat a bonus. Or if you dont want to close it and the card has a yearly fee you can call and ask to have it downgraded to a non-fee card. Closing can hurt your score in some situations.

It's not so much that they purge records. Citi has an 18 month rule. You can't get a bonus from Citi if you've opened or closed the same card in the last 18 months. Chase has a 5/24 rule. American Express only allows one bonus per card type in your lifetime.

They changed that a short while ago. No more than one bonus within a 24 month window within the same "family" of cards. Family = AA, TYP, HHonors etc. Sucks.

So basically now I am churning Alaska and MS with what I have. Haven't applied for a card in 5 months.
