It seems almost unanimous on this board to recommend Vanguard index funds for Roth IRA. What are the scenarios where there could be a better alternative?

Scenarios where there are better alternatives for a Roth IRA?

Hmm. Maybe if you were very confident that a specific _____ would outperform a Vanguard index fund over a long period of time. I'm not sure what could be put in that blank other than maybe real estate, but general consesus would probably be that there are easier/better ways to own real estate and I'm not sure I could come up with a specific scenario where a Roth IRA was the best option for it.

Better alternatives? Not really. There are equivalents, but the differences between many low cost index funds are negligible in my opinion. You can find many similar funds offered from Fidelity for example. Vanguard just specializes in them. So many advise Vanguard to somewhat idiot proof retirement investing.

Edit: of course "better alternatives" is a subjective question. You could get better returns from other investments, but they're less safe. For the vast majority of people that aren't going to do extensive research on investing, low cost index funds are the best option.

I prefer Fidelity accounts to Vanguard. I used to have accounts at both places. A couple years ago I moved everything to Fidelity. Fidelity's website, tools, reporting, mobile apps, and customer service are superior to Vanguard.

I do prefer Vanguard products though. So I primarily buy Vanguard ETFs in both my taxable and ira accounts at Fidelity.

If you're just starting out then Vanguard ETFs may not be feasible given the commissions. However, Fidelity Spartan index funds are comparable to Vanguard funds and some are actually cheaper.

Also, I've heard that Charles Schwab is another good place to have an account with.

Another thing I like about Fidelity. They have a cash management account which has now become my primary checking and billpay account. I used to have this at ING Direct, but closed it once they got bought out by Captial One.

I even have Fidelity's Amex 2% cash back card which is nice (no fees or limits).
