$28,000 to rebuild a caterpillar diesel engine, about 9k over budget. It was hard explaining that one to myself, let alone the wife
And a couple 12k checks to uncle sam, those hurt the worst

58k for a house down payment. Wasn't that bad though, over 30 of it was from the sale of the old house.

Besides a down payment on a house the biggest check I wrote for a product was 28K for a new car. The funny thing was that the car dealership didn't want it.
After picking a car and settling on a price I was steered to the finance guy.
Him: And how would you like to finance this? We've got really low interest rates.
Me: I'm gonna write a check.
Him: Oh, you don't want to do that. You should always use other people's money.
Me: So, what should I do with my money?
Him: Invest it. Buy Japanese Yen.
Me: The Japanese yen fell down the rat hole last year.
Him: OK, we'll take your check.

Did you actually "write" the check though?
I had to get a cashier's check from the bank for my donw payment. Does that count as writing a check?
