What's a good area to rent in NOLA?

Very unfamiliar with New Orleans. Looking for a small townhouse that isn't a multi-family dwelling. Areas suggested are Lakeview & Old Metaire, which would be ideal, but those seem to be larger homes for >2k a month.
Primary concerns are safety as I often take the dog out at 3 or 4am and I don't want to be murdered. Would also like to avoid anything too collegey. Willing to commute 20 or so mins.

How many bedrooms and what's you're budget?
Uptown/Lakeview would be my suggestion.
My roommate are and I are looking at living on the Westbank though cause we are tired of paying the high rent uptown.

I'll rent you some bedrooms if/when I buy at Algiers Point.

I'm in. If I wasn't going back to school I'd be looking to buy myself, but tution is a bitch.

You're a financier? What are you going back to school for?

Analyst. Picking up some hours for the CPA

I get my certification in September and I'm already looking to get out of that field. I'll be going for the CFA when eligible.

I really only need one. I'm fine with 2-3, but the extra space isn't needed.
I'm willing to pay ~$1500ish, but I just assume buy a house or commute from somewhere before paying 2000-2500 in rent. I'm prepared to pay a premium for a safe, nice area if it is within reason.
I've found some du/tri/quadplexes, but I'm not crazy about it because I don't want to share the entrance/backyard/parking with others. If we entered from opposite ends and the yard was split fenced, I'd consider it, but haven't seen anything like this. It looks like a lot of the post-katrina remodels have been turned into multi-family dwellings because the market is better for 1-2 BRs than 3+.
There's some luxury apartments in the CBD which look great, but I've seen too many of the videos of people getting mugged at gunpoint walking home.
Also what's the best way to search/availability like? I don't expect to find something tomorrow, so should I just monitor Craigslist/Zillow or is there a better method?

Already pre-approved for my loan... just waiting for the right property
I'll probably remain seated on the sidelines since the market is pushing its upward boundaries & I'll likely be leaving for work at some point in the foreseeable future.

Live in Lakeview.
You could easily find a nice 2 bd\1 ba for ~1500 or less
Best way to find a place is on craigslist
new orleans craiglists --> apts/housing --> map view
Zoom in on lakeview and check em out. Just checked myself out of boredom (lived there last year) and found 6+ places for less than 1500 that were 2bd\1ba or bigger.

I didn't pass so the CFA is on hold for me. I'll go back to it, just not in the right place for it.

I'd strongly prefer Upt or WHD in my early-mid 20s to Lakeview.

You're looking at a tall order being so picky. There are some nice places you can get for that, but you'll have to look hard and sacrifice a little bit.
They go quick on Craigslist. I saw a nice 2/2 uptown for 1800 on CL and it literally lasted less than an hour.

Agree w dr Schultz. Moved every year in grad school and logged into craigslist each time to find places in Lakeview. Found safe, and relatively cheap places central to anywhere in the city for 1500$/month split between 2-3 roommates. Was a great way to spend grad school and I loved it so much my wife and I bought here in March. Best neighborhood in Nola IMO.

The only redeeming quality about this place is the pool and I don't even have time to use it.

Seen a few duplexes, think there's a standalone or will everything be duplex?
I'm a little paranoid because I've had some terrible neighbors in the past and fear having problems with people.
