Those of you out there that have had dealings with the IRS, tell me if this sounds legit? Got an automated call yesterday that went to my voicemail on my cell phone. Says that "the IRS is filing a lawsuit against you." " To get more info on this case file........". Gives me a 800 number to call. I should be served papers of at least something in the mail. I have used the same CPA for 10 years so I'm not worried.

It's a well-known scam. Just ignore it.

They're filing a lawsuit against you for not reporting the money that the Nigerian prince entrusted to you. Hope you have enough left over from his highness to pay the taxes.

Can we file suit against the IRS for letting this go on?

They were calling my pregnant daughter's phone, so just to alleviate her concern, I called them - just to fish for information.

The name given was some female first name and the last name "Johnson".

So, I called the call back number and I get a dude with a subcontinent accent. He says that the female Johnson wasn't available, but he could assist me. His name was coincidentally also Johnson. I asked where his office was located and he says "Los Angeles" - and I'm in Louisiana. I ask, "The United States, Internal Revenue Service?" He says, "Yes." So, I hit him with, "So your name is Johnson, the other agent is named Johnson. You're with the IRS in Los Angeles and you have a subcontinent accent. Why don't I believe you?" *CLICK*

Obviously, I gave more time than I should have, but the daughter got a laugh out of it. I guess they're not used to dealing with folks with critical thinking skills. Normally, we would ignore is as the scam it is.

It would be incredibly odd for the IRS to leave an automated voicemail about a current lawsuit. UNAX issues and all of that.

Scams are intentionally easy to see through. They do this so that they only reel in the biggest suckers.

That is why it is always a Nigerian inheritance. Anyone with half a clue about reality knows it is a scam. They don't want to deal with those types.

A guy from around here fell for it and transferred thousands of dollars to them, then they wanted more than he had, by the time he figured out what was going on he was broke and tried to commit sucide, but was unsuccessful.

The tw major emotions in order for scams to work are greed and fear.

I was returning something to Wal Mart not too long ago and was behind someone who was trying to wire $2000 to Jamaica because he won the Jamaican lottery. This guy was in his 60s, and it looked like it could have very well been his life savings.

Watched the manager flat out deny service to him. Told him it was a scam to the point where the old man was screaming at him.

I said something to the manager, and he says he catches all that he can (a manager has to be called if a wire is over $499), but he knows they probably go somewhere else.

I kept getting the calls. A foreign guy kept saying the FBI would be at my house to arrest me at 6 p.m. I just played along and asked him to repeat the time so I'd be sure to be home. He got prissy with me and told me I was rude and hung up.

I did not go to jail just in case you were wondering.

I received a call very similar to this a few weeks ago.

I was about to dail the 1-800 and ask the caller if we could schedule a meeting. I was not having a good day and was about to come unglued. I thought about it for a second and hung up and deleted the message on my phone.

My favorite is getting the call from Microsoft and saying they've detected a virus on my computer.
