Feb 26, 2024 Walmart is set to split with a 3-1 ratio.

Anyone buying?

I think I will. Should be around 36/share. Might see if it drops after split then to buy in.

It's going to be around $56/share. I think they try to keep the share price down for employees. I have a medium sized position already.

I was thinking about buying some and read this-

quote:

if you invested $1,000 in Walmart stock 20 years ago, today it would be worth only about $4,400. The same thousand bucks invested in an S&P 500 ETF would be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $6,500 today.

Does that include the dividend?

I think WMT is a little pricey here, but if you invested $1000 into WMT 30 years ago, it would be worth about $20,052 vs $18,359 in SPY.

Also, if you invested $1000 into WMT 17 years ago, it would be worth $5,165 vs $4,840 in SPY.

My point is 20 years is a bit arbitrary and is obviously looking in the rear view mirror.

Long term owner of WMT. It was my largest holding 30 years ago. It did have a long run of being stale, but the past 5 years or so have been solid. PE is 28. That is a little high; many good stocks are on the high side these days. The company numbers have been strong the past few years and are tracking well for this year. They are on a January year-end fiscal year and will have end of year reporting out soon. I think it is a buy right now.

S&P index funds are my thing. I don’t know near enough to dabble with any significant amount of money in individual stocks and Vanguard’s VFIAX has been pretty good to me over the years.

I can never understand the allure of stock splits as a buying advantage. How do splits translate to a buying advantage? You own the same percentage in the same company before the split vs after the split.

Why are 2 shares at $5 better than 1 share at $10?? I just don't get it.

The theory has generally been that a high price per share limits retail investors, although some brokers allow fractional share purchases now, mine does not.

So if you want to invest in AVGO and you are depositing $300/mo you are going to have to wait 3-4 months to buy a single share.
