This weekend I was involved in a hit and run accident. A guy backed into me with his truck and then swiftly drove away. I got his license plate # and filed a police report immediately, but something tells me the guy will get away with this. I have uninsured motorist property damage coverage that I understand will cover the incident.

Anyhow, the damage to my car is relatively minor. I have a small dent in my hood and I'll need a new grille and bumper grille. I am not happy about the prospect of paying my $300 deductable to make these repairs. Can I get an estimate from the Honda dealership for the repairs and receive the check made out to me? Or can I just say I'm too busy to get an estimate and have an adjustor look at it? I can order the two parts I need for about $250 and install them myself, and all I really need done professionally is to have the dent on the hood bent out. This would allow me to recoup my deductible.

I am unsure if this is possible because the vehicle is financed and I don't know if my insurance company (USAA) will make a check out to me if technically the financier (also USAA) technically owns the car. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Your options are...

Report incident to insurance. Pay deductible and get repair.

OR

Say nothing. Repair it yourself.

$300 is a really low deductible. I wonder how much you would save with a $1000 deductible. Probably enough to pay for the repair out of pocket.

When i got hit a few years ago, i told my insurance company that i wanted to do the repairs myself. An adjuster came out and cut me a check, minus my deductible. I was able to fix my truck for less than the check amount so I had some money in my pocket after I was finished.

I have some knowledge of the insurance industry. Your insurance company may be required to include your lienholder on the check they issue you depending on how your policy contract is written. Btw, if you have even a minor dent in your hood, repair + repainting is likely going to run well over $300. Good luck.

UMPD deductibles are almost always $250. If your car is financed you shouldn't have UMPD because you have collision coverage, therefore you'd be paying for the same coverage twice.

If you file the claim USAA will subrogate on your behalf and put pressure on the police and other party. If they are successful, the first $250 they recover (or $300) will go directly to you.

The fact you got a lic plate number is key... You can do a claim and the insurance company will likely file sub against the other vehicles ins. based on that info

If it is verified he has no insurance then the UUM will kick in(applying UM can be different in each state). Your deductible may apply until the UM investigation is complete.

The claim shouldn't be a knock against you but you may want to verify that with your agent.

Important details about the accident you should tell the ins. when making the claim. Was the car parked and unoccupied? Was your car moving also? Were you moving but stopped when you saw the other driver?

If the other vehicle has insurance, driver of that vehicle may have an entirely different story when their insurance contacts them for their statement.

ETA: You will get your deductible back if the sub is successfully paid.
