How unsafe is it?

Venmo is great. Been using it a lot with bachelor parties and whatnot recently.
Just got on board with SQUARE cash to try that one out.
My only issue with Venmo is there is a live feed of all of your friends' money transactions. IMO that's no one's business.
EDIT: Square Cash, not snapcash.

do you link it directly to your debit account? sounds fishy...

I have mine on private, so people can't see my transactions.

You can turn this off.

I use it and Paypal for my soccer team. Works just fine.

It's a service of Paypal, very secure & stable.
You can set your default privacy settings so that only the parties in the transaction can see it.
If you link it to a debit card, no transaction fees. If you link it to a credit card, there are fees.
The way it works is you basically have an digital "checking" account with paypal. You can move $ in/out of that account into your traditional checking account as needed. Anyone else who has the app can transact with you quickly & easily.
I use it all the time playing golf with friends and for splitting bills at restaurants.

Not only do I use it, I get mad when somebody owes me money or if I need to pay them and they don't have it. And yes I link it to my checking account

my friends just got mad at me for not having it

Use it multiple times a month, set it to private and nobody can see your transactions. Never had a problem and have been using it for a while, except when I didn't know about the privacy settings and some work friends saw me getting paid for "strippers and blow" or other stupid stuff my friends would put.

I send my mom, among many others, money through Venmo all the time.

Every person I knew in college used it. Still use it very often today.

My friends and I use it for various things, and we are in our 30s.
My brother is in college and they use it for everything (rent, utilities, food) that we used to have to get cash out for or write a check.

I block this to "Only Participants". I pay rent and my child support every month this way.
It's owned by Paypal so the security is top notch cyber-wise and no less safe than handing someone a check.
No issues for over a year here. Great transaction records with notes as well. Especially handy for paying an ex for extras like basketball registration, splitting ballet supplies, etc.
