You almost doubled the age range. You most certainly moved it.

But new trucks with specific trims/finish/color packages you're talking about that help make things a wash from a price perspective are pushing new truck MSRP's sky high these days.

And you think used values don't increase accordingly? Because they do. I bought a 2012 F150 FX2 for a price I'd be lucky to pay today for a used version with low miles.

Some people prefer the peace of mind of new, or the ability to pick the exact options you want and not have to compromise what you want due to availability. ETA: Then, when you factor in the additional value of the newer model, it's basically a wash.

I'm just talking about saving money. So with regard to that, I don't think any of this matters. If a new truck is $45k and a 3 year old truck is $35k, you're saving thousands of dollars buying used.

All that matters is total price of the vehicle. Or total price paid over the life of the loan really..

Again, not arguing what is a better deal. But some people don't want to spend $45k-$60k on a new truck.

I said nothing about used car pricing due to options. I said that new truck pricing compared to use card pricing is more than marginal and much more than a, "wash," like you say.

You brought that straw man up. Not me.

Poster we're interacting with is a bit of an argumentative billygoat on the OT in the one thread about trucks I've see him posting in.

And here we go. You changed the parameters from what OP was looking for, all the while being condescending. But I'm the problem. This place never changes.

You almost doubled the age of the vehicle and tried to pontificate to me.

How often do you fail to get the last word, regardless of the situation? Ever notice a pattern in threads you participate in? How they all end up going a certain way, with a certain tone?

Y'know what? Don't bother with any of those. Just click this link and see if you can figure out who you would be in this story...

This thread didn't have a post for an hour, and you're the one that took a personal shot at me.

Nah, this right here is you. Feel free to have the last word if you'd like to have it.

An effing racket. Who in the world thinks any 1/2 ton truck is worth over 45k is a fool. Don't give me the trim and features speech. It literally just has a crappy onboard computer that is incredibly overpriced. Oh, and ford, do I really need back up trailer steering assist?

To help define the OP question, it is really about the buyers personal abilities.

If you know how to do basic maintenance and vehicle repairs, it makes no sense to waste money on new vehicles.

I have my own OBD2 scan tool and was raised by a father that is a mechanic. I search craigslist for one owner cars (at over 100k miles) with all the maintenance records. I can buy almost any 4-5 yr old car (loaded with every option) I want for less than $15k.

My wife, kids, or I drive them for another 100,000 miles and sell them for about $5,000.

Rinse and repeat.

However, when it comes to HVAC in my home....I know nothing. I am a moron. I have to pay the premium every time. If it is a question of repair completely or replace and the price is "close", I will buy a new unit for the peace of mind.

I think cars are like that for many people. You don't understand how they work, and you can't fix them cheaply so you buy new.

Let's just all agree that when we buy new, we are paying extra $$$$ for peace of mind that we would not need if we educated ourselves better. I wish my mom was in HVAC repair. It would have saved me thousands over the years.
