I’m looking for the proactive expert. What can we do ahead of time? Not a financial planner, and not a tax preparer, someone who could work inside the “lines” for tax shelters.

Business? Investments? Rentals?

What’s your situation?

There’s lots of good tax CPAs out there that can plan.

I know two companies who might be of interest. Both companies paint within the lines but it can make you nervous. I have used both with success. I would need more details on your situation. Own your own business? How is it structured? Depending on level of assets you might want to look at some special types of trusts.

Most larger CPA firms are moving toward value added services like planning since prep fees are higher and places like HR Block can put out a return for most John Q Public.

Look for a CPA firm that has a litigation side or a tax lawyer partner.

So, a lot of the CPAs who do this are no longer taking cold calls. But if you have a referral, you can likely get in.

Talk to your successful friends, neighbors, business associates, etc about who they work with.

If you use a financial advisor / planner, ask them as well. More and more you are starting to see financial advisors and tax planners work together.

Once you get some names, around June 1st, start making some calls. Tell them you are looking to develop a long term relationship with a CPA who can help them with tax planning. Give them the name of the person who referred you - this is important.

Understand the CPAs who do this often charge $250 an hour or more for this level of work.
