Switching jobs no insurance for 30 days, options?
Posted by fouldeliverer on 7/15/14 at 1:11 pm00
I'm extremely ignorant of my options. I'm vaguely aware of COBRA, but not sure what it is other than it's very expensive. Do I have to get this? Are there other options? Do I need insurance at all?

Cobra means you pay the full premium. The part your employer currently pays is on your shoulders now.
I believe you can retroactively go back to cobra should something come up.
And keep in mind with no preexisting conditions you can go obamacare if an emergency comes up

you can actually pay for cobra retroactively if something major were to happen....so I suggest that unless you know you will have a major need in that time period
basically you keep the cobra paperwork, and if anything happens, you can then fill it out and apply for it and pay for the month
if nothing happens, or its just something minor, better off paying it out of pocket and just being uninsured for that month

Even if you are no longer with the company in question, the HR manager will still help you out here (assuming they are not an idiot)
In fact they would have a major employment practices liability if they are not properly advising you.

Don't be so sure. I routinely deal with various HR managers and they're usually lazy morons.

Since you say you are leaving the system, I am assuming it is on your own accord.
papa perfect always told me to move from employment to employment where possible.

get coverage or prepare to deal with every injury or sickness as a pre existing condition for the rest of eternity

Please elaborate on your post. I am in a similar situation as the OP. I moved from one job to another. The present employer will not allow me on their insurance plan for 90 days. How will this affect me?

Why not sign up for Obamacare, and cancel it in a month when the bill.comes?

You can have a gap in coverage if it's less than 61 days or something like that
i had a week gap and busted my eardrum like a year later and had to fight the lack of coverage for that time for my claims as they were getting denied because of "preexisting condition"

obamacare changed the way pre-existing conditions are treated, so my advice may have been a little outdated
previously, if you went 61 or more days with no type of coverage, you wouldnt be covered for certain pre-existing conditions.....but supposedly they can't deny you now, but I'm no insurance expert...i was just speaking earlier on a similar experience
