Strategies to prevent credit/debit cards from online fraud

It seems like every other month or so I have one of my credit or debit cards compromised with online charges.
Just this week my credit card was hit and then today my debit card and now they are both shut down waiting on new cards in the mail.
Not sure where or how they are getting the numbers and decrypting the security code but it is a pain to constantly fool with.
A simple solution would be to not buy anything online but that is not an option for me.
I'm considering maybe only using one credit card for all online activity at least that way if it is hacked I only lose one account temporarily.
I surely can't be the only one that goes through this regularly.

My rules for my debit card are simple. No online use and if it has to leave my hand, it doesn't get used.

Do not use debit cards online. Not because the transactions aren't protected but because there are much greater repercussions short term.

Only time I use my debit card is to get cash out of ATM or at a place that only takes debit and no credit.

I've come to accept that my credit cards will be compromised periodically. I don't know how to prevent it. Thieves will always find new ways to steal.
Some steps I take to decrease the chances of CC theft are:
- I don't use my CC at any gas station along any interstate highway. I pay cash.
- I don't use my CC at any convenience store ever.
- I never use my CC at any out of town restaurant.
- I keep a spare credit card that I only use once a quarter or so. That card is my go to card whenever my primary card gets compromised until my new replacement card arrives. I do not put the spare card's number on any website or online merchant.
- I check my credit card accounts online every weekend to look for unauthorized charges.

I must live a sheltered life, in over 20 years using credit cards I have yet to encounter fraudulent use.
Irresponsible use perhaps, but never anything I didn't do myself.

I use multiple cards all over the country, for years, and have never had a breech. Although I know others who have.

There is an easier way - Just use an Amex for everything

My cards have been compromised many times. It's quite frustrating but seems to be something I have to deal with brcause I use credit cards for everything. Personal and business. I'm a points/miles whore.

My card has been compromised three times: once after I used it to buy something in Charles deGaulle Airport outside Paris during a stopover going to Kiev, Ukraine, once after I paid for my hotel in Yerevan, Armenia and once following the well-publicized incident where Home Depot's CC system was hacked exposing customers who had recently used their CC to pay for something in one of their stores.
I never lost a penny from any of the above.

Yep, unfortunately it's a fact of life. It may never happen to you, or it may happen often to you. Mine has been "compromised" 3 or 4 times, and only once was it from an online purchase. You are just susceptible to it happening from use at a big box store as you are online. There were never any unauthorized charges on my card when it was compromised. The credit card company always caught it before and charges occurred.

The CC company caught "suspicious" purchases being attempted on my card, declined authorizing the purchases and contacted me to see if I had been the person doing the purchases.
I wasn't so they canceled by card and sent me a new one.
I've been impressed by how the CC company has algorithms that can identify purchases in real time which don't fit my buying history enough to decline a purchase as it takes place.

Same here. Compromised 2-3 times, and CC company (Chase) caught them in real time and notified me. In all cases, at least one charge resulted in being authorized, but I responded to others and all were identified as fraud. I have not been responsive for a penny, and a new CC was overnighted to me.
As for tips, use only one CC online with good fraud protection, and maintain a backup CC if that one gets cancelled. I would never use a debit card online.
Another step would be to use a prepaid Visa or Amex. Load up only what you plan to spend, and only use that card (not see about online, but definitely for travel). Of course keep at least one other available for emergencies.
