Current employer wants me out, and I already have another job, but I'd get a month's salary in severance if I don't "resign."

Worth ~$6k (after taxes) to save face and say I quit?

Hell no! Get that severance pay!!! If they want you out, you'll end up making them more miserable by staying and end up with $6,000.

No. Keep the money.

Unless they move your desk to the men's room.

If you think that it will make a difference finding a job down the road, then yeah, maybe resign.

But otherwise, get the severance. Forced to resign and fired are practically the same thing, anyway. They just may go out of their way to bash you or spread rumors if you don't offer your resignation, but you need to decide whats best for you.

Some companies are slow to fire people. Be cautious your current job doesn't impact your future job.

Why not just go to your boss and say, "Look, I know you want me gone. I'll go quietly, no threat of lawsuits, no trouble, just pay me the normal severance package and I'll resign. No hard feelings."

If they really want you out, they'll jump at your offer. And, you'll have the best of all worlds. You'll get paid, you won't have being fired on your record and you'll leave in a classy way.

It's worth a shot, right?

I agree with this. They are either going to tell you flat out no, get pissed and fire you on the spot, or agree with you. In all three cases if you stand your ground, one way or another, they will have to give you severance.

And while you're talking to him you can case his office for the best drawer to take a crap in.

It goes without saying, but get that in writing. I can see y'all coming to a nice handshake agreement, you packing up to leave, then calling HR a month later asking for pay only to hear your boss laughing in the background.

On second thought, the scene I just created in my head is really funny. Don't get it in writing. Roll the dice, coward.

Probably a good idea. But if he distrusts his boss that much, I'd probably just put my iPhone in my shirt pocket recording the audio of the conversation. I've done that before.

In Louisiana as long as one party to a conversation knows it is being recorded it's legal to do so.
