BERLIN – Samsung Electronics Co. is unveiling a new tablet PC named Galaxy Tab as the latest device meant to rival Apple Inc.'s popular iPad.

Samsung Europe executive Thomas Richter said Thursday the device will offer users "a new galaxy of possibilities" with features such as mobile video conferencing and a video chat function.

The thin tablet device weighs 13.4 ounces (380 grams) and has a 7-inch (18-centimeter) touch screen. Richter said it comes with Google Inc.'s Android 2.2 operating system and Adobe's Flash Player.

Smaller may be better.

At least that is what I've told my wife for years.....

It looks fine and they might well have hit on the optimal size for such a device but what a terrible name. Can't help but think about the butt ugly old Ford Galaxy.

Somebody tell Scoop this is what we mean when we say "competitors quickly make a better product than Apple."

quote:

While we still don’t have an official release date or pricing, at least it seems like the tablet will be worth the wait.

The Galaxy Tab will have a 7-inch screen (running at a 1024 by 600 pixel resolution), and the same 1-gigahertz processor and PowerVR graphics processor seen in the Samsung Galaxy S phones. We now know for sure that it will run Android 2.2 (also known by its codename “Froyo”), and will support Flash 10.1. It will also sport 512MB of ram (twice that of the iPad), a rear 3-megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video conferencing.

It will be available in 16-gigabyte and 32-gigabyte storage flavors, and both will be expandable by up to 32-gigabytes via a memory card slot. Networking-wise, it will support 802.11N Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and will be 3G equipped. Samsung lists it as a 3G HSPA connection, which will work with GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile’s in the U.S. — but there will likely be a CDMA version coming to Verizon soon, according to the carrier’s internal systems.

This board fails at the tech news so hard every time (obviously I'm primarily talking about S**op here). There's a 10 inch one slated to come out in 2 months.

There is some talk that it will actually have Android 3.0 (Gingerbread).

I read engadget and the other tech sites on a daily basis to try and keep up with all of this...the Tab is going to be the second legitimate tablet to come out.

Same brah. Video looks legit, I'm glad it finally saw the light of day. We'll see how the battery life holds up. I think the iPad is still the "better" tablet though.

I can start helping you out with all the tech updates

I think they are different products do to portability. I would buy the Tab over the iPad personally. I think 7" is the perfect size and it has a wonderful design. The apps look like they have been designed extremely well for the product. If I was someone that took the train/plane all over the place and was on the move...then this thing would be absolutely ideal. I think it is a nice step in the right direction.

I agree. Before I would buy any of these products I would first have to find a legitimate niche they would fill in my life. As a student, I don't have that "niche" yet, but if I start traveling for work next year...I can imagine a niche being created.
