OP's plan is as good as any.

Would it be better to do a 50/30/20 (or 60/25/15, 70/15/15, etc.) in VTI, VYM, and VEA?

Probably, if you had $100K in the account. With $5500 it's not really worth it.

So I'm trying to exchange some of my Vanguard Target Retirement 2055 for VTI and VYM, but these two aren't available to choose from among other vanguard mutual funds. Any idea why not?

VTSMX is available. Is that pretty much the same? It says I need to open a brokerage account to buy VTI.

They aren't mutual funds, they are ETFs. Just type in VTI or VYM into the symbol lookup and they should pop up.

ETA: Are you trying to buy these for your IRA or your 401(k)? My 401(k) isn't with vanguard so idk if they allow you to buy these ETFs or not for that type of account.

I have mine with Fidelity (started a few years back), so I can't speak for Vanguard, but the process is really easy.

$5,500 isn't a lot of money. You shouldn't need to worry about how to invest that now. Keep adding to you savings.
