Way to pile on the guy when he's in an obvious bind with a smug remark about him or his wife's debt. Guy comes here looking for advice and you have to chide him about their debt?

Sounds like a good plan, with whatever is going on to have those med expenses coming up someone will prob be missing lots of work, give yourself some wiggle room. Open enrollment is coming up , make sure you have the best health insurance offered.

You might want to take the refi to 15 yrs. If anything for the peace of mind . you can not recover if you are stressed out all the time over money. Take it from someone who has easily spent 50-60k over the last 8-10 years on medical. High stress = slow healing.
