I'm gearing up to make a rather large purchase (~$20k) and the seller charges an extra 3% for using a credit card. Checks and wire transfers from a bank are the only options I see for payemnt. Is there any way to earn any rewards without using a credit card in a situation liket this?

No CC is going to give you enough rewards to take that hit straight up unless you factor in sign up bonuses. I still don't consider it a wise move.

Imo, in your scenario, you can actually leverage your position in a way where the 3% fee might make sense.

If the vendor will let you split payments across multiple credit cards why not get multiple CCs and use your opportunity to meet minimum spending requirements on all of them quickly? Consider 3 options:

1 - Chase Sapphire Preffered ($5k), Citi Premier ($3k), Citi AAdvantage ($3k), Chase Ink, if you can get it ($5k), SPG Amex ($3k), Chase BA (at least $2k).
The above will net you 125k Chase UR, 53K Citi TYP, 53K AAdvantage miles, 28K SPG and 27K BA Avios. Enough for many many flights and few hotel nights.

2 - Alternatively you could get the Chase BA and spend the entire $20K on that and net 120K BA Avios. (BA avios can be redeemed on AA and AS flights which make some SWEET redemptions. Think 25K RT West Coast to Hawaii, 25K RT Boston to Ireland, 15,000 RT to carribbean etc.)

3 - If you could wait around for the SW 50K offers to comne back you could easily earn the companion pass (good for free travel worth ~$3,400). I have a referral for the 50,000 SW Premier. If you can find a referral for the SW Plus or SW busines with 50K, this could work.

I would DEFINITELY take advantage even at 3%. 3% of 20,000 is $600. I can easily think of a luxury getaway for 2 to Hawaii or Europe. But I'm sure, 20K spend will get you most anywhere in the world. Especially if its a couple. Well worth $600 imo.

I was actually thinking of something today... not that you would have a CC offer you this but lets say it were a 5K purchase. Do you get reward points for a cash advance? Then pay your card off instantly from checking.

No points for cash advances. They don't even count towards minimum spending requirements.
