Have noticed that there are only a handful of good ones in the GBR area. I know there is a barn a dude built out in amite and that thing is booked for the next 2 years. Wondering how hard it would be to build a nice building/barn on some land and rent it out for 8-10k every friday and saturday night? My sister got married at a rustic type cabin. It was 5k and all they did was hand her a key to the building.

Don't forget to account for parking....most existing business structures don't have sufficient parking to handle large events. If you're developing from scratch, you'll need paved parking. No one wants to get all dressed up to traipse across a gravel parking lot.

8-10K just to rent a hall for the night? That seems high.

I don't know about Baton Rouge. In NOLA, most of the wedding venues also include the catering, bar, DJ - the whole thing.

My cousin owned one for about a decade. Made really good money - but his background was as a chef and caterer. His wife did all the planning. Staffing was a pain - you don't want your servers to call in sick.

If you are just providing a space, I think your issues really are just the cost of building a large, nice space, and parking like the prior poster said.

As someone who is planning a wedding currently, I can confirm that the GBR area has a dearth of options. The options that do exist cost an arm and a dick for venue/food/alcohol. They're all booked up until y3k. Understandable and I'm not upset about it, just wish I was on the receiving end.

I do think if you have a catering background or something, it's likely a very good next step. But, as others have mentioned, it requires the money to purchase a large parcel of land and build a picturesque building.

Staffing and marketing are the biggest issues, I think.

It's definitely a possibility, I agree many areas lack them and that's what drives the price up. I disagree on the catering, you can certainly make extra money that way but plenty of places just have a small kitchen and have 3rd party caterers. Many have preferred caterers too. Parking is definitely big, gotta have parking for 50-200+ potentially. Don't forget Sunday's, tons of weddings on Sunday's that are Jewish or otherwise overflow due to price savings.

Ordinance is the big thing. It's not easy to find a place to get a commercial permit without obscene commercial prices.

Eta: don't forget about sound. You'll have bands and dj's so you can't be next to homes without pissing people off.

Have a cousin that turned our grandfathers barn into a venue and it is booked solid. They are very affordable for the area so that is one plus as well.

They live on the land and have plenty of parking and a brides suit for the brides and bridesmaids to get married. Bathrooms and catering area are a must.
