We did not have insurance last year because I was self employed and it cost me 1.3k today for the fine. That is messed up.

It'll vary depending on his situation, but there's no way it was under $1300 for the year, so in the end he saved money. The question is, is the amount saved worth the risk of not having insurance? That's up for him to decide.

Better get it now. Within 2 years, you will pay that much per person if not repealed. It escalates quickly. Really no excuse not to have it anyway and you are lucky nothing major happened

I bet you are looking forward to next year where it will double again. I guess you were lied to about it was going to cost you $50.00 this year as a penalty.
