Ok guys, go easy on me. I have 5,000 I would like to invest in something long term, any suggestions?

COP. As soon as it gets to around 65. You should consider yourself fortunate that you just happen to have 5000 and are new to investing while all the major oil companies are down.

Reinvest all dividends.

Another thing to check out is some of the different topics in the "stickied" thread on top.

I'm very much new to investing, as I just got a substantial raise, but I've been researching using those threads and I feel much better about it.

Don't invest it in one company. I can't figure why someone here would tell you to do that. I'm not an expert, but the true finance guys are going to point you toward actual good advice.

I emphasized the need for a Roth when I emailed him, and told him that if he wanted to invest in companies as well he should diversify. No worries.
