New job opportunity - Memphis

Anyone working in the Memphis area? It looks to be home to many businesses in my industry (logistics). I assume this is because of FedEx primarily.
I would get a bump in pay from $100k to $140k. However, we love Raleigh and NC. I'm 32, wife is 27.
Feeling like this might be once in a lifetime opportunity. Looking for opinions on job change as well as Memphis area.
The HRM mentioned that many people live "over the state line", which I assume is MS. Schools look good and housing is much cheaper than it is here, so we would get some nice positive equity on that front.

Not at all. I could say 40% increase, but then it would make a difference if it were $30K.
FWIW, still paying off student loans and this would go a long way towards that, and other things. However, not so sure about living near Memphis.

You're young, chase opportunity. You'll also find that the place doesn't matter. If the job is Good you'll find/make a community and a satisfactory social life.

I left Raleigh to chase a better opportunity in a city like Memphis and regret it most days. The wife and I are similar in age to you and your wife.

It looks like the money makes since but I would have a hard time leaving Raleigh. I don't live in the Memphis area but I work on the Mississippi and Arkansas sides of the border and I've never been very impressed.

Correct.

With that "bump" in pay many would move to Afghanistan and love it.
With that being said, it's highly unlikely you would love anywhere in the Memphis metro area as much as Raleigh, NC.

Many do live over the state line but if you have "yuppie" sensibilities I would recommend Germantown or Collierville Tn., where the vast majority of the people in your socioeconomic status reside. They both have excellent public schools, great parks, low crime rates, independent local governments and are both still very close to Memphis.
If you would prefer a more laid back lifestyle with a "country" vibe then you might want to look over the state line in North Ms. Southaven and Horn Lake are basically South Memphis and I would not recommend them for anyone in your situation.
Olive Branch and Hernando Ms. are the other cities closest to Memphis that are probably the more viable options for you if you don't want to live in Tn.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I've seen Olive Branch, Hernando and even Nesbit. Those would all be well within driving distance.
We prefer suburbs and I don't see anything in Germantown on Zillow that would meet our needs. It looks very similar to Cary, NC if anyone has ever been there.

I used to live in Lakeland. Really liked it. I would go back.

No state income tax in TN btw.

Just live on the west side of Oxford and commute. Better than any option in ms or Memphis

The Shelby County schools are bona fide shite storm.

If the new job offer is nothing more than a bump in pay, use it to get more out of your current employer and stay put.
If the new job offers experience or responsibilities that are unavailable to you now, but needed to advance in your field, move.

With no state income and COLA probably closer to 50k raise. That said, I probably stay in Raleigh. Collierville ain't what it used to be from a few relo clients I've worked with and friends who still have family in the area. Local Memphis gov't is a 4 alarm dumpster fire. We keep hoping MS will annex Memphis.

From someone who has moved in his career(unlike others who just comment)
1. Money is not everything- but it does matter.
2. An employer who will not counter your new offer is not an employer you need to be faithful to.
3. If you are going to climb the ladder of corporate success- do it while you are young- You don't want to be moving furniture later in life.
4. Don't listen to people who have never been in your shoes.
5. Think about quality of life and put your family first.- Don't make a move if your wife is adamantly opposed.
Raleigh is a great city. Memphis is a good place. You just choose to live in Germantown, Cordova, are the newer growing areas like Arlington.
I have a high six figure cousin who has made his career in Memphis- he lives in Germantown, raised his family there and loves it
I have another six figure cuz who lives in Cordova and has been there 20 plus years and loves it
I have another friend who just moved there for the same reason you are considering and they live the east burbs that are growing and they have fallen in love with the area
One other question you will need to ask - is will I stay there long term or will this be a stepping stone move?
Areas to look at Lakeland, Cordova- Arlington is the new growth area. (germantown is nice but pricey)

Great area for your industry. You could continue climbing the ladder in your industry here as well. Tons of 3PL/logistics companies here because of FedEx having such a late cut off on pick ups for shipments (11:30-midnight).
A lot of customers I work with seem to commute up from Northern MS area because it is most convenient to the DCs in the area.

yup. those are nice areas. I do business and some investing in the memphis area. It's not like he has to live in whitehaven or frayser or hickory hill or raleigh/bartlett. and some of those areas have some nice homes. One must remember that memphis itself is 60% AA population and is why it gets a unfair bad rap overall because of some crime in certain pockets. I've seen majority black neighborhhods in memphis very well taken care of and they are not the hood. now do they have hoods? yes. what big city doesn't?

Is there any chance you can get a raise/promotion at your current firm and stay where you are? Or with another company in your area?
I love the triangle area of NC. I think Memphis will be a shock compared to Raleigh.
40K (and more when you consider no state income tax) though is big. What about the job? Is it a big promotion? What about the company? Is it a bigger company? Have you looked at their culture? Have you been out to Memphis and checked it out for yourself?
