Got a call yesterday from a company offering me a job. I'm having a hard time making a decision.

Current Job:

Salary of 68k and good benefits. Good job and I have very little stress if any. Future of the company and my current position isn't currently in danger but I feel like it is moving in that direction. Boss is a hard worker but she sometimes treats employees like children. I like most of my coworkers and have a good relationship with everyone. No chance of a major raise but yearly small raises are guaranteed.

Possible New Job:

Salary of 60k with similar retirement benefits of my current job but the insurance isn't as good. Job would be a walk in the park and I would have zero stress. As easy as my current job is this one would be 10x easier. It is also 15 minutes closer to where I will be moving in the near future. A 5 min drive versus a 20 min drive basically. A few of my good friends also work at this company. I would be working directly with them and this job would take us on the road 2 or 3 times a year. I have a better chance at getting good raises but they aren't guaranteed.

Do not be the last off of a sinking ship.

This is what I'm thinking but I feel like at the worst the company will be bought out (already talks of this) and I would be retained. Again this is just me talking. Absolutely zero evidence to back it up.

What are the chances of new job matching current salary?

You're going to need to decide what that 8k mean to you. Also, which job would have a higher ceiling?

Which job would give you a better chance of moving up the latter, if that's what you want to do.

Also kind of depends on your current situation. Kids/family? If you're already living tight on the money, that 8k may put you in bind. There's really too many variables for anyone on this board to tell you what the right decision is.

Offer is firm 60k to start with them. The opportunity to get raises is there though and they are generally big raises if you prove yourself. There are also bonuses.

8k really isn't putting us in a bind at the moment. I'm starting to lean heavily on taking the new job.

What do you want out of your career?

You mention the new job is 10x easier. Is this a good thing for you? Do you care about advancing your career or is the job a job and you just want to work with people you like and have a steady paycheck?

I want to do well at my job and move up but my family is my priority. I'll bust my rear end at work and do my best to help the company but at the end of the day it's all about having time to spend with my family and being able to enjoy doing the things we enjoy. Having a kid changed me in that aspect.

Sounds like the 2nd job would be a good fit then.

How is excatly is the insurance not as good? Are you looking at more out of pocket expenses in premiums/deductibles/co-pays?

Premiums are a little higher, around $100. Deductibles and co-pays are higher.

To me that is an easy decision. From the way you described both, I think you have already made it.

Probably so. My biggest hangup is my boss that hired me is still my boss today. She is a pain but she gave me a chance over other qualified people. I'm a loyal person and that's eating at me a bit, but in the end it's about my family. I'm taking the new job.

So it's about $800 less per month, absent any raises or bonuses. If you can survive on that, go for it.

Yea there are other avenues I can make up that money if needed. We live pretty conservative lives so we'll be fine on that front.

Just made this same decision myself in October, and like you my perspective changed drastically after having children. I still think there is good opportunity with my new company, it just isn't as established as it was at previous employer. Still, I also got 2 hours a day of my life back dropping a commute, and that's a big deal to me. Get to see my boys a bit more each day.
