So my wife is in desperate need of a new minivan. She's sold on the new '18 Honda Odyssey, which literally is just making its appearance at the dealerships up here in New Hampshire. The conundrum we are in is that her current Odyssey needs a major engine repair but not worth the cost based on it being a '09 model and worth about the same price and the engine rebuild. Anyway, tried talking her into a new 17 or even another model but she's dead set on the 18 and can't blame her as she's hauling our kids around all day. Leads me to this question....given the van is just starting to hit dealers and they get one or two per delivery, it seems dealers won't be keen on significant savings off MSRP. Give me some good advice on how to approach the cost conversation? Do I just go straight to asking for dealer or factory invoice? I usually use USAA pricing (true car) but given its new true car pricing isn't even out yet.

Let me know how it goes. My wife is set on the '18 Odyssey too. We have a little time though because the twins won't be here until Sept/Oct. Probably looking to buy around that time or maybe a couple months later.

Major engine repair on a Honda that's less than 10 years old? Yeesh. But as far as negotiating goes I imagine they won't move too much depending on demand. If it's on the low side you might have some room but I know nothing about the minivan market.

Twins! Congrats! We have twin girls and a boy. You'll be enjoying minivans for the next 14 or 15 years. Will def let you know how it goes.

Yeah. This seems to be the same problem the 10-13s had. Needs re rining costing about 2900$. I put a new spark plug in which they say may last me about 1000 miles which seems odd but what the hell do I know about engines.

What? I have a '15 so I'd like to know what problem you have been having.

I know nothing about minivans but wanted to request this topic being moved to the OT board so I can get a good laugh at their responses.

What is wrong with a 2017, 2016, etc.? Your wife is not in desperate need of a 2018 vehicle I can promise you that. You buy a 2018 in 2017 when you DGAF about the price, because you aren't saving any money.

The ones who want to be first in line, pay a premium.

Is there a significant redesign or something from 17 to 18? Why is she so set on the 18?

Yes, the 2018 Odyssey is a new design. We plan to keep it 10 years or more so might as well get her the new body-style I guess. Happy wife, happy life...

Gotcha. My wife did this with the 06 Civic. We had to replace a car after Katrina ate hers. The 06 had just come out and was a new design. They were making tons of deals on 05s but 06s no real deals to be had. She held her ground and wanted the 06, so we got it.

11.5 years later, I am driving it (I took it over about 8 years ago) and it's still going.
