I recently got interested in starting my own business doing side professional services such as marketing, photography, videography, editing, consulting, and other services.

I intend to start small taking small bites in this field as I have a steady job in a related field.

When would it be beneficial to start an LLC or any business filings with the IRS in Louisiana?

Form your LLC now. Given the small cost there is no reason not to in my opinion.

Couple of things. Form the LLC now. Get a credit card. Keep your books up from day 1. This saves you time and headache down the road. And money.

Secondly, as someone who managed a startup agency for 2 years, it's a grind. Very saturated space. No barrier of entry. Make sure you really have the talent (not saying you don't) and desire. Lots of "agencies" that do terrible work, get motivated cause they have a bunch of gear, and flame out in 9 months. Find your niche. Pick your price and be picky on your clients.

My biggest piece of advise is to establish your revision process before the first client you ever take. We spent so much time dealing with scope creep and revision requests early on that tore into margin and drug on projects. Simple way to do it: Discovery Call - Initial Draft - Revision 1 - Iteration - Revision 2 - Final signed deliverable. Done. Force your clients to sign on what they asked for or they will always find more.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I know it is going to be a long road if it ever takes off.

I am just looking to pick up some tasks and things that I can work on during the weekend and at night. I have done about 18 years of video production work, and I want to start something for myself. Still photography and marketing may be a new ventures for me, but I have picked up enough ideas and skills from the video work to hopefully carry over into a general or gig business. I also don’t want to piss in the punch bowl that may conflict what I am doing now, so starting small will need to be key.
