Are there a lot of layoffs in your area? I have noticed lately lots of small businesses are letting go a few people. But what surprises me that they are telling them the day before and not giving much notice is this normal? What is the correct way of going about this? Anyone company doing this right now?

This has always been the norm in the industry I work in during layoffs brought on by budget or workflow decreases. Hell I've seen it happen on Christmas Eve to about 30 people in 2009. If the employee is just getting let go due to their capabilities they usually give said employee a couple weeks to line something else up.

Yeah when the mortgage company I worked for laid off 80% of the workers, they pretty much called us all to the conference room, handed us a packet explaining our severance , and said good luck. No warning though we pretty much all saw it coming.

If you give a guy 2 weeks notice that he's getting laid off, he's gonna mail it in or frick shite up for 2 weeks

Plenty of layoffs locally at area shipyards and oilfield companies. Heard today of a few majors that recently expanded fixing to layoff / close partially.

We're understaffed and hiring consultants to help bridge the gap before we can hire more full time employees.

One of the oil and gas pipe producers up this way has been cutting a lot and cutting others to a 4 day week.

Haven't heard much about Nucor though. They seem to be making it ok.

Manpower is the easiest cost control for most businesses. It happens. How to do it is really indicative of how you run your business and its size and specs.

If you're small, take care and personalize the experience. If you're bigger, then its understandable that some may be culled from time to time.

The better the communication in your company about the overall direction, mission, etc, the more easy it will be to discuss potential cutbacks. Never fun obviously.

Heard weatherford/Jemmaco and K&B machine are both laying off. Also heard weatherford may be closing and changing ownership.

It's a bad move to let people know or give notice of a layoff. Our procedure is to inform them, have last paycheck ready to hand over, then escort off property.

I get this but am always puzzled that the same companies would expect the courtesy of notice from the same employees if the shoe changed feet.

Reason number 412 not to give two weeks notice.

We don't accept two week notice either. Same policy stands

Fin are you discussing the policy for non acceptance of notice for sales positions? That's a general policy and precedent that's shared almost universally for a sales spot.
