Wife is interviewing for a new job. Her current job has 21 days PTO. She does shift work so she might be off three or four days a week. When we time vacations correctly we can really stretch the days.

The new job she is being offered has 2 weeks vacation and 4 pto days. The kicker is that the vacation has to be used in week increments. So if she takes vacation a week that she only works 4 days, she still uses the whole week. Not ideal, and way less flexibility. She can buy a 3rd week.

I am thinking ask for the 3rd week with an option to buy a 4th. Or ask for more money to cover the cost of the week. I ha e been out of the corporate America for a while so not sure how negotiations go nowadays.

Everything is negotiable . Don't be afraid to ask. Worst they say is "no".

This. There's a good probability that this question has come up before, since it's a pretty unorthodox way of doing time off. Just ask.

How much is a vacation day worth? I looked up how much a senior team member gets and they get like 4-5 weeks vacation and over 10 personal days plus the ability to work at home pretty often.

Some companies won't negotiate vacation as it's a visible sign of compensation.

I had left one job where I had 20 days of vacation to another company which would only give 15 days. You had to have 10 years of service before getting 20. I tried my hardest and they wouldn't budge even one day. They agreed to salary and bonus requirements of my first counter offer without much fuss so money wasn't an issue.

In the end, I got the company to increase my salary 1-2 weeks of pay. I could then take off a week unpaid and it would work out about the same. Though I never did do that, which worked out to an extra 2% raise.

Always take higher salary over better benefits if it is a choice.

Look up how much a 401k match can mean over 30 years and get back to me. This is a stupid statement. Just shitty health insurance alone can be the difference in hundreds of dollars per paycheck.

If they won't budge directly on the vacation time, consider negotiating her work/service history to get closer to the extra vacation sooner. I regret not pushing the wife harder on this last job change to ask for more than the $$$.

Vacation is definitely negotiable. As previously said just about everything is negotiable. Personally I'd always ask for more vacation especially if countered with a lower salary or being asked to move to a new job for same money.

In my opinion vacation is a good way for employees to get a lot of value in negotiations. Because the managers I deal with are usually only focused on the salary per person.

That vacation in week increments is total bullshite. I wouldn't move on that personally.

Most banks have this policy. It's a way to prevent theft and fraud as if someone has some elaborate scheme, it will sometimes expose itself with that person being gone for a week. It is absolutely non-negotiable with a lot of banks.

In my experience with vacation negotiations, there is some flexibility on how many days you start with if you start mid-year somewhere, but future years is pretty rigid. Unless you're interviewing for upper management/executive level. Really depends on the industry, company, and size of the company.

He obviously means if everything is equal, so he would rather take a higher salary compared to it being put into a benefit. Given that, it depends on taxes.

But for the most part I would agree, I'd rather be paid the money and get to decide what I do with it rather than figure out what the "company" will do with it. I am almost always better off handling my own money.

OP I think we need to hear more about the change in scheduling and as said what industry.

I would personally tell them that vacation time is important, and that the new job is basically taking away 2-3 weeks of vacation. Therefore if they don't budge on the vacation, the pay needs to make it up.

I've seen many companies that are by nature very tight on PTO and it is very much frowned upon to use all your leave or take unpaid leave. So its definitely something that should be asked up front if you are going to be using all or more of your PTO. Which there is nothing wrong with, but being in situation where you fit in with your vacation time is very important. I've seen people have to quit because they never took vacation and were tired of being in an office with a team member always gone. They couldn't handle that.
