Jefferson Capital sent a collection for a Sprint bill. Haven't been on Sprint in 10+ years

Any advice on how to handle nowadays?

It used to be that just contacting the debt collector ran the risk of "resetting the clock" on a charged off account.

They acknowledge they can't sue for it because of the age (although they don't specify the age).

I'm inclined to ignore it, but don't want this going to my credit report. My credit is great.

Thoughts?

Jefferson Capital seems to be a scam.

If they try to ding your credit, you can dispute that with the credit agencies.

Iberville Parish had collectors calling me for a few years about one of their BS speed trap tickets I tossed in the trash. Ignore it.

A collection agency dinged my credit report on behalf of AT&T last year for a phone that wasn’t paid for. Had my name and used a different address. I disputed with the credit agency and they said it was legitimate.

I called AT&T and they have their own fraud department and they cleared it. Check with Sprint in case your credit agency doesn’t come through.

Age is your friend.

Most states 3+ years they can’t sue
7+ years they cannot report to the credit reporting agencies unless you make a payment

I have a Verizon bill that gets dropped off the Credit reports this year. They even started emailing about it, but I ignore them.

I would ignore it.

I don't think just contacting the collector ran the risk, but a partial payment would likely reset the clock.

So you skipped out on paying someone money you owe them? And let it damage your credit? Why not just pay it years ago and help your credit? Plus, do you legitimately owe them?

I found something saying Jefferson Capital is actually a foreign LLC out of the Republic of Georgia. The MN address is a front. Definitely don’t pay these gangster scumbags if it’s 7 years old or more.

Edit: one source said foreign LLC but a court document says they are really CompuCredit based in Atlanta, Georgia. Either way, don’t give them money.

I have a Cox debt for $300 that shows up on my credit report every 5 to 10 years. Not mine and I just dispute it with credit companies and they remove it.

This is why you should ignore it. No one cares about these bullshite collections. They aren't a blip on your credit.

Have you ever needed to get a loan and were unable? Do you think some Sprint bill is going to change that?

Thanks for the help all.

Decided to ignore it and see if they put it on my credit report and will deal with it then.

However, to answer the question above, many years ago, I had a few small collections on a report they hurt my credit score and 100% had to be cleared prior to getting a loan we were working on.

My oldest son had a ton of medical issues growing up and we were always fighting with collections getting thrown on our report.

Not sure if it’s still the same, but 10 years ago definitely having even one collection account could kill a potential loan for you.

I like how the first 3 questions basically imply the OP is a POS for not paying this bill, then

Plus, do you legitimately owe them?

you verify if it's a legitimate bill. Do you honestly think Sprint would let a bill go for 10+ years just sitting there before selling it to a credit agency if there was any legitimacy?

Did you owe them money back then though? Did they send you a final bill, and you did not pay?

I still get letters in the mail from a collections agency for a jay walking ticket in Houston in 2008. Throw them away just like I always have. I’ve lived in 5 different places since then and they’ve found me at every one

Subsequently found this... so ignore is the correct course of action.

"The law limits how long you can be sued on a debt. Because of the age of your debt, Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC cannot sue you for it and cannot report or continue to report it to the credit reporting agencies."
