Is it possible to be too aggressive with a 529 plan? And 529 question.

Scenario.

Starting plan for kid who was just born.

Plan is age based with 3 "funds" moderate, conservative, aggressive

My thoughts are 100% aggressive to start for a few years. Then rebalance later on.

Apparently the age based plans are supposed to balance themselves as getting more conservative as it goes on.

If that's the case, then why offer me which funds and how to allocate?

The whole point of a 529 is to get tax free growth. So imo be 100 percent in equities will yield the most growth over the next 20 years. Also the goal would be to use some of the money each semester for 4 years so you will want to still be earning while your kid is in school

I'd be willing to take some shots when the kid is young.

When he/she is 17, though, I would not want to be 100 percent aggressive. A bad drop at the wrong time could be terrible.

Both the responses are about what I'm thinking. I'll probably be super aggressive for about 10-12 years then taper off

This is what I am doing. I have a 7 mo. old and child #2 expected end of June.

In the Iowa 529 plan, we have a choice of 5 funds. I will stick to the aggressive while they are young.
