How frugal would you say you are?

1-10 scale, 10 being "only shop with coupons, don't flush my toilet regularly" Frugal and 1 being "I'll just put it on my credit card"

I'd rate myself a 5. I always enjoy a good deal, and generally buy generic over brand names at the grocery store, but I also splurge on things such as beers with friends, and long weekend trips with the SO. I could be better about saving.

Probably like a 6.5 bordering on 7.

I hate spending money. I rarely eat out, I buy new clothes maybe once a year, don't turn on my thermostat unless it's freezing cold or blazing hot, I don't buy the newest fancy techno gadgets, etc.

So when it comes to really throwing money around, I don't do it very often. However, when "it's time", I go for it. I typically go to all UGA football games which adds up to a pretty penny considering contribution, tickets, gas, beer, etc. I usually go on a few vacations a year, some involving flights, so that obviously adds up.

But in general I'd say I'm more frugal than most..especially people in my age range.

It varies through the year with me.

My wife and I spend a lot but we also save a lot at times.

We have fun now while we are young as well.

There should be relativity attached to your question.

When we were younger one of our friends joked it was fortunate there were no more Buffalo nickels, because MrsNC would have squeezed the sh*t out of those Buffaloes.

We're in a far different situation now.
Old habits die hard though.

MrsNC still collects coupons. Probably costs $100/coupon now in time to cut and collect each one ( ), but she enjoys it. Keeps us grounded. The mentality actually translates to investments too, so it still works.

In my own opinion? 4.5-5. Somewhere around there. Maybe a 4 during Christmas.

When I compare myself to others my age? 8.

Probably a 6. Since I discovered Amazon prime, I buy more than I used to because it's so easy.

Probably an 8

I'm pretty frugal and I like it. Allows me a good amount of excess for investing and hobbies

Just bought dog food - it was cheaper than at the store and I'll have it Saturday. Hopefully my dog can survive on two cups tomorrow.

Compared to this board, 3 or 4.

In reality to my peer group, 6-7.

I drive a nice new vehicle, I generally buy shite when I want it, I buy nice stuff, but I still put back a good bit of cash, and I can easily afford the shite I buy. I don't have a credit card. Car Note and Student Loan are the only outstanding debt I have.

Interesting timing on his thread. I've recently started reading the "Mr. Money Mustache" blog. It's inspired me.

I've recently decided to see how far I can cut my spending and it looks like I'm going to come in right under $1,000 this month. That includes my mortgage.

Obviously not something I want to do all the time going forward but honestly it wasn't that bad.

I could probably get to $1700-1800 if I got really tight. No way I could do $1000.

What is the definition of frugal?

I drive a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 140k miles. I have zero debt. I'm not married and have no financial obligation outside of supporting myself.

I'm also 26 years old and make 6 figures working for the most recognizable brand in the world.

Last weekend I went to one of the top restaurants in the world (French Laundry) and spent over $900 on the check.

With that said, I save over 20% of every dollar I earn for retirement. So that leads me back to the question...what is frugal?

By the average person's standards, I am probably NOT frugal. But also by the average person's standards, I'm saving way more (as a % and overall).

No fing clue.... Less frugal than I used to be, but thats because a lot has gone on and I now realize you can't always save save save and never enjoy it. Life is too fricking short.

Could I be frugal if I needed to, hell yeah... But I am still maxing out my contributions to retirement and putting away a little cash. Could I be putting away more, yes, but for what reason? I am exactly where I want to be in regards to savings, so might as well enjoy the rest.

So to answer the question

5 years ago, I would have said a 8
Currently, I would say a 3 (But I don't put anything on CC I don't have the cash to pay off the next month)
