Any word on what kind of gift, if any, they will give Diamonds this year? Last year I got 100K points.

What is this? I'm a Hilton diamond....is a retention offer?

Mariot rewards here.... It would be unusual if I didn't get offered an upgrade but I tend to stay on the outskirts of a metro area... For instance I've never been offered an upgrade staying in new orleans

I've gotten several upgrades in New Orleans with Marriott Rewards (Platinum). JW and the Marriott both on Canal have upgraded me multiple times. Just depends on time of year obviously.

I got the 100k Hilton points reward last year, but so far, nothing this year. I've been a diamond for 6 years now and have been satisfied with my upgrade success rate as well as the speed at which I accrue points. Redeeming points for free nights at virtually any hotel I want to stay at has never been a problem, though sometimes it's worth it to choose the points + money option when redeeming. (example: 20k points + 80 bucks instead of 50k points)

I recommend picking a chain and sticking with it. Hilton just happened to offer the best hotel options in the locations I frequent for work.

Truth!

But it's always smart to have a backup program just in case. Not saying you have to be top tier at both because that would be damn near impossible for most folks to achieve unless all you did was travel.

Marriott is my main for work, with my backup being IHG.

Marriott requires 50 nights to maintain Gold status...I routinely get in the high 30s for work and they extend Gold to me anyway. Its happened the past 3 years so I'll be sticking with them for that.

I agree with having a backup program, and am also a Silver with Marriott and whatever the first level up with IHG as well. When Marriott had the stay two nights get a free level 5 certificate, I was all over that.

Speaking of upgrades, do you ever ask to be upgraded?

I ask all the time when I'm travelling with my kids.

If we're staying on points, then the upgrade happens less frequently than if I'm paying for the stay.

When I'm paying for it on a business trip, I get the upgrade probably 75% of the time without even asking.

Yah, that doesn't look like a retention offer...especially if you didn't initiate it. Nice for you! I'll be on the lookout but doubt I'll get anything.
