Having a problem with a credit recovery company

I sold a car at a loss in 99 and paid the difference to a lender that no longer exists.
Years later I start getting dunning notices for about 800 bucks.
Find that somehow I still owe this money and the debt was sold to a recovery company. It's hurting my credit and I'm fixing to buy a house in 2007. Original loan company is out of business and there is no way of finding out what happened or getting my money back.
I'm pissed but I pay it.
I've moved bought a houses etc and it was on my credit report as an old debt paid.
Now I'm getting these dunning notices from the same company 7 years later for the same thing.
Anyone ever had this happen?
My bank is trying to help me find these records of this old payment but "they aren't hopeful" for a variety of reasons .
Any ideas?
Otherwise clean credit.

No, but check to make sure it's outside the statute of limitations for recovery and if so, send them a cease & desist letter. I wouldn't even worry about proving you paid it to them if it's outside the statute of limitations. And don't acknowledge it in any way.
I dealt with a couple of these collectors that buy these old zombie debts. Both of mine were similar situations where I thought my account was settled, and moved a couple of times before they tracked me down. They're relentless, but will stop if they see you know collection laws. Google zombie debts.

If they try to collect you can sue, and you can win, way out of statute of limitations.
