Long story short, my brother has decided to pursue his masters at the age of 40.

He is no dummy...

I consider him to be very intelligent and he has been very successful in his business ventures.

He just called me pretty upset. He scored a 480 on his first practice GMAT. He has about a month to practice and he needs a 550 to get in. He will be fine with a study guide right? He is freaking out that he won't get it. Since he owns the company though, I don't think its a huge deal...its just an ego thing to him.

I think I made a 570 or something when I took it which sucks too so I told him he was asking the wrong person for advice.

Any books you guys reccomend for a 100 point bump?

Manhattan GMAT has really good small guides for individual topics. If he can identify his weaknesses, he can focus on those specific guides. I improved about 100 points that way. They come with some good online material as well.

Lots of people bomb the first time, Its a time crunch for the math section even if you are cruising. I bet he does much better on the next time. 550 is easily attainable.

I just recently spent 5-6 months studying for the GMAT. I am now in graduate school working on my Masters in Accounting.

I hate the GMAT with a passion.

He must first understand the GMAT. Data Sufficiency Questions, and the Verbal Section. Understand the format, type of questions, time allocated to take the test.

Also be aware that is an endurance test. However, many business schools don't care about the Essay or Integrated Reasoning. I skipped over those two sections and went straight to the quant/verbal sections.

Manhatten is the best IMO. Followed by Kaplan. Also by the official GMAT practice book as it has former GMAT questions. I looked at the Princeton Review book but didn't find it useful

If he got a 480 on just his first attempt at a practice test, a 550 is certainly attainable with a month's worth of preparation.

I studied the Princeton review book for 2 weeks and went from a initial 510 on a practice test to a 710 on the real thing. So I'd recomend Princeton review and the GMAT practice tests on the MBA.com website.

Do the manhattan guides. Use gmatclub.com. Spend 2-3 months reviewing and taking test. Most people should be above 700 at that point.

I scored 640 but it took me forever to relearn some of the math concepts. I didn't study every day but off and on the first month or so.

The higher I could get on the GMAT the more scholarship I could get, which is why I studied pretty hard.

Eh we have a top 10 accounting school in the country. Number 1 in the SEC for masters programs, so it works itself out.

Yeah our scholarships are based off of your GPA X 200 plus your GMAT. I got a 560 the first time and then a 680 the second time, saved me about 20 grand.
