Any advice on selecting a fee-based financial planner? Basically, I would like to have a single visit to ensure that I have the appropriate amount of life insurace and ask various other questions about retirement planning.

I am interested in this as well. Any financial planners on here that could outline types of investment vehicles, 529 plans, life insurance, etc. etc.

TIA

I am a fee based financial planner and would tell you I charge yearly fee - hourly makes no sense. I see you might be in Woodlands. I have office in Houston primarily, but travel to Woodlands every other week. If your open to sitting down I will discuss everything with you and see if I can be of any help. Of course there is no fee, but if it makes sense we can discuss a business relationship more in detail and I can answer all your questions.

Do you have an email address?

Given where you are located lsuin09 I would recommend sitting down with someone and having all your questions answered. Given tax brackets will continue to skyrocket and cap. gains/div. tax increasing in near future utilizing tax deferral startegies makes a ton of sense. Just depends on how much income you earn and what is best fit for your short term - long term goals.

529 Plan is a great idea and can be used essentially for any education expense and allows tax free distribution if used for some form of qualified education expense.

I'm not sure it is fee based or not, but I'd avoid Stanford Financial if I were you....

Stanford, eh? Sounds pretty prestigious. How could I go wrong?

It's interesting. In the Palo Alto area there are a lot of small businesses that glom off the "Stanford" name - Stanford Auto Repair and Stanford Carpeting & Flooring come immediately to mind. Within the past two years or so both of those companies changed their name. I assume the real Stanford has started to come down on these unauthorized uses.

The university sued Sir Allen for claiming to be a direct descendant of Leland Stanford and also turned down a substantial donation from him. I feel sorry for all those Exxon folks who lost their life's savings. Justice may never be served.

Will Cover (nice added value to the topic) Just an FYI...but every company/firm has negative feedback/complaints, etc. That is just the nature of the beast and what would this world be without disgruntled employee's/people

Ameriprise acutally takes a fidiciary responsibility to their client...not many firms will or can say they do that.

End of the day the firm is important (ideally you don’t want a place that has to push funds and of course has open platform for investor or some guy name Bob who says he has a financial planning practice in his basement) but you are hiring the individual and instilling your trust with them. The goal of an advisor should be to teach and inform the client of their options – being a resource and building the game plan for their short term – long term goals.

Unfortunately in this industry you have extreme turnover and that leads to advisors not getting the neccesary training or no training at all for that matter... then incompetent people running around with licenses to advise jumping from firm to firm trying to make a quick buck. The good thing to come of this is with the Stanford’s/Madoff’s being caught hopefully that will continue to tighten regulations and trainings. I have built my practice with the focus on client relationship and shooting straight from the hip. I have acutally never been busier given the facts eluded to above.

I would advise for someone who is looking for financial advise to sit down with a few people and get a feel for what you are looking for and what you want from the relationship...what can that advisor bring to the table that relates to what you want to accomplish.

That is very interesting.

I would argue that, if not in blood, he has certainly shown himself to be Leland's descendant in ruthless capitalist spirit.
