XOM, COP, CVX, PSX, LNG, APA, VLO, SLB, BP, XCO, CHK, HK, and so on. I watch a lot of them...
I'm investing in energy index mutual funds though so someone who knows more than me can spread it around appropriately across the industry.

This is what I'm dollar cost averaging into. Seems fool proof

you do realize that index funds are allocated on a formula basis ?
There is no "someone who knows more" spreading anything around right? that's why their expenses are so low.

I assumed a team of professional fund managers were watching energy stocks daily and making moves to avoid bad companies/news stories and to capitalize on good companies, good earnings and good news stories.
Are you saying it's pre determined what percentages of investment go into which stocks and no one actively manages or tweaks the formula ever again?

have you looked at their balance sheet? I guess they could be a highly speculative play for a short term gain if oil jumps up surprisingly.
In reality they will either sell their assets or go BK if the current oil price scenario continues for the the entirety of 2015.

If the fund tracks an index, the managers don't pick stocks. The index will be weighted by market-cap. An actively managed fund will be picking stocks.

I may have been overzealous with the use of the word "index". I like VGENX...

epic fail. Anadarko is an E and P company; not service.
That stands for exploration and production, which means they get oil out of the ground.

might be a noob question, but why VDE and not VGENX?
