I graduated from LSU with a degree in Economics and a Business Administration minor. I've been looking for a job for about 8 months and haven't had much luck finding anything decent. Any advice on places to look/positions to apply for with this education?

I'm a CPA working in Audit for 15 yrs. The current job market is by far the worst I've seen. Its difficult to get any job right now.. hopefully things will pick up sooner rather than later.

I can attest to that. The last interview I went on was for a medical staffing agency. After two trips to New Orleans for extensive interviews I tried to close the guy, only for him to tell me "We really like you but just please be patient with us because we're really not in financial position to make a new hire right now". Kind of ticked me off but I guess I'm getting valuable interview experience.

What did you hope to do as a career when you decided to major in econ? Were you planning on grad school back then and have just changed your plans now?

Internal or external?

Yes this is definately the worst cycle in a few decades, but relatively speaking the auditor is in better shape then most professionals in this market.

accounting is one profession that is less immune from the business cycle than other professions.

I have read shite on blogs that even doctors are getting hit this time around, which is strange. I guess our inflated health economy is being popped a little bit.

I'v always kinda thought ECON was one of those degrees that was useless unless you got a PHD in it or coupled it with another major like accounting.

I don't know about that, but I think if you want to use it [undergrad] in the financial industry, it has to come from a top tier b-school. Just the way of the world.

I've heard the first two ECON classes are intended to help those majoring in ECON to ask, "Do you want fries with that?"*

Econ is a decent minor to tack onto a finance or acct degree (I did it). It's also a good lead into law school. The old curriculum of getting your Econ Degree through the college of business had a pretty useful course load, but no one was doing it, so they axed the program.

Outside of engineering and business school, there's not much to do with a bachelors besides go to grad school or get a job that requires "a college degree". Right now, even engineering and business kids are taking the MBA route.

Architecture doesn't count, it's a 5 year program and I think they get a master's upon completion.

to my understanding LSU will not grant you a minor in a given business curriculum if you major in another given business curriculum

unless you graduated years ago or you got an exemption from the dean, you probably don't have an official business administration minor

am I wrong?

yes.

I planned on going to law school and I enjoyed economics the most out of other business fields. As I neared my graduation I decided that the legal field wasn't what I wanted to go into and didn't want to change majors with only a couple of semesters left.

As of last year, you could get your Economics degree through the business college or through arts and sciences.

That's how I was able to minor in Econ.
