I was thinking of giving this as a Christmas gift as oppose to traditional gift cards from retailers.
Are there any fees in getting or using one?

There is a fee when you buy one. I get my wife one for christmas and she buys my gifts on it so I cant see it on the CC bill.

Fee on $100 card is likely $6 which you pay at time of purchase.
Those cards do not work on all online services.

I buy them at Winn Dixie to get the 6% cash back points at grocery stores on my Amex because I'm a bit of a cheap arse. I always get them for the max $500. There is a set fee of $5.95 to activate the card no matter how much money you put on it.

Just give the person cash or a check. It's so much easier to deal with. A visa gift card is no more thoughtful than cash, and it costs you money.
My MIL just gave me one for my birthday, and I wish she saved herself the $6. It's not that I don't appreciate the gift. It's just pointless to me to pay $6 just to give something that is harder to use.
