Do I really need to setup a business entity?

So Ive been earning income part time as a "side hustle" for about 10 years. Ive always reported all my earnings and basically filed as a sole proprietor. Even took many basic business deductions. As I near retirement years Im planning on putting more effort into it to increase my earnings to one day become my main source of income. Is there any reason why I should consider setting up an llc or s corp? if its just for asset protection wouldn't an umbrella liability policy do the same thing? im not against this and know I will need to consult a lawyer but would like the boards thoughts on this.

What business is it, and how much are we talking here? If you're just farting around then sole prop it. Considering an LLC can be done online in thirty min and a couple hundred bucks, no reason not to make it more official though.

LLC take 30 minutes and like $100. Just do it, it's not some big formal process.
I don't know if you need it, but there's really no reason not to do it IMO.

An llc for a sole member business is very easy and inexpensive to set up. No additional tax returns or issues, and you have to every year fill out a very simple annual report for the state. It's a no-brainer.
And yet, you should also have an umbrella liability policy. The policy could kick in for small problems.
