No dog in this fight, but do you not try to protect every dollar you earn?

Yes. All day. Everyday. The point I am making is sometimes the customer will say "I have a quote from X dealer" Ok..fine...can you provide me with the quote so I can beat it? "No...It was over the phone and I don't feel comfortable giving you their numbers"
So you want me to match or beat a number that may or may not exist?

Coach, I'd called, or went by every Chevrolet in the BR area. When I called the Mac Haik dealership in Houston, I never told them I'd been shopping. I asked him about the stock numbers of 4 LTZ's they listed as (Special) their internet page. I actually called because I thought the price was a joke. He informed me that GM was offering a huge rebate on the LTZ's. No dealer in this area mentioned that to me. I was previously looking at a 2014 model, because I wanted a LTZ, but didn't want to pay $40,000 for one. I actually got the 2015 LTZ/LZ2 for $1000 more then I could have purchased the used 2014 model I'd been looking at in BR with 15,000 miles on it. My SIL's dad worked for a GM plant in Michigan, we usually get the employee family discount though them which is substantial, but the rebate was far better then even that. I just fell into a good deal. My point is that no local dealership even made mention of it.

I guess I think a bit differently than some here on this subject, but feel relationships are important as are local business ties. If I get the old lines, hard sell on extras I don't want, financing, etc. I'm out. I like a company with low turn over in personnel as well. There is a price to be paid for service and long term, it's called making a profit. They won't be around without it so I don't begrudge them one.
I study the market conditions for a certain vehicle and have a good idea where the car should be bought price wise given incentives, day of month and average time on the lot of vehicle.
The dealer has a number they can sell the car at period and cover their overhead. It's not some abstract but a definitive price. If the dealer knows you are serious, knowledgeable and HONEST in your dealings they in my experience have been as well. People complain about dealers, but then love to tell of getting over on them.
Ive bought a fair amount of vehicles and feel the salespeople like to see me coming not because I am an easy out, but if we will make a deal I am prepared enough to feel good about the costs and not have me shop it all over the world to save $100 after spending time in good faith. Do I get the absolute rock bottom deal, probably not, but I do get value and people who I call in the future that go out of their way to assist and minimal waste of my time better spent elsewhere.

Well then shame on them.
So they wanted to make 4k (example)....so instead of coming off of that and maybe making 1.5k...they made 0.
I never understood why some dealers will refuse to make a lower profit. 1 is greater than 0 all day long.

RE: not getting decent service from local dealer because you didn't purchase with them: what hogwash. People move all over the damn country all the time. Do you really think a reputable dealer will refuse your warranty work because you bought someplace else? Any dealership playing this game isn't one you want working on your car anyway.
Some of the best service I've ever received came from out of town dealers I had the misfortune to visit while on vacation.

A dealer wouldn't refuse your warranty work because that would be passing up money. I'm just saying that the dealer is less likely to help you out (i.e. loaner vehicle, goodwill repairs) than their "sold" customers

I think its BS when a dealer tries to "scare" you into buying from them becasue of that. When I moved out here I tried to form a local relationship with one of the places here and keep my long standing one in nola for my location there. The sales guy tried that line with me and I didnt buy from him because of that. I dont like that. There is a warranty on the truck...you cover it regardless. I never...NEVER got any special treatment from a service dept on any car or truck that was even the slightest bit over. They tell me sorry ford wont pay us so you have to pay. Mater of fact this same local dealership that I tried to settle in at went for a joy ride in my personal car (supercharged mustang). I dropped it off to get some warranty work done before it ran out...was like 50 miles under when I dropped it off. I know for a fact...becasue I wanted to get the work done BEFORE. When I picked it up it was 200 miles OVER. They even had the before millage on the paperwork from when I dropped of the car. Told me BS like ohh they just guess at the millage...they dont always put down exactly what it was. And the same dealer tried to tell me a truck needed a new motor 7k for a ticking sound it was making. Turned out it was one spark plug that was cross threaded releasing gas (short version). Like I said too many lies and issues with too many dealerships for me to be warm and fuzzy with them. Sorry coach you seem much nicer than the ones I have had to deal with....

Understood. And Yes...I know all the horrible stories. But...there are good ones out there. The ones who have to be dis-honest or use sales tactics that have zero to do with the actual vehicle are dealerships who struggle up against the big boys. Others who have done the right thing through out the years have no issues.
