Cost to repair or replace a main breaker?
Posted by BigAppleTiger on 2/6/13 at 4:54 pm00
Anyone know the estimated cost to repair/replace a main breaker in the Marigny? Inspection report suggests breaker is loose and supported by a strap and it should be fixed or replaced. Any have any estimates? Sorry if vague.

This is a lot more than quoted on the OT.
Here's a little more info from the OT thread. Could you tell me why the estimates differ so much? TIA.

Need to know the brand of panel/breaker.
Some breakers are obsolete and may require changing the whole panel. If available the breaker cost alone could range from $25 to a few hundred.
If there is no disconnect ahead of said breaker permits will be required.. add a few hundred for that.
Not to mention if permitted other items may need to be brought up to code.

That sounds like some old thing that could really be a killer.
But any electrician should give you a free estimate.

It depends on the actual scope of the work. Simply changing out a single breaker shouldn't cost that much. But if you are upgrading, and doing any wiring work, then the cost will increase. I had to replace aluminimum wiring with copper when I upgraded the breaker box in my home and dropped in a 220v line about 12 years ago. It cost me $1,200, but it lowered my insurance costs by reducing the risk of electrical fire. Copper costs have skyrocketed since then, so I'd imagine any re-wiring would increase the costs significantly.
