Cost for E-filing

My preparer wants to charge me $139.00 for electronically filing my return, in addition to what they are charging me to prepare my return. This is a preparer recommended to me, so I don't have a past history to go by. Is this charge exorbitant?

Turbo tax is free E-file. Even the deluxe service is only $34 total.

So, how would I take what the cpa has prepared and then personally efile?

My H&R Block software includes five free federal e-files and twenty bucks for each state e-file. It probably costs your preparer even less to e-file, so, yes, it's a ripoff.

Do you have just one state? If it's Louisiana, you can input the information and electronically file for free. What are they charging you for preparing the return if they charging you that much to efile?

TurboTax Deluxe for the month of February is $28. Louisiana state return is like $36. I did mine on there a few weeks back and had the return approved within 24 hours of submission. Already had the federal return direct deposited into my bank account too. If you do not have a complex return, I dont see why they are charging soo damn much for efiling... Do you own a business? Or have some crazy circumstance that results in some difficult return? All I have is 2 kids, wife, student loan interest, donations, and some medical expenses. TurboTax was so idiot proof, even I did it successfully haha

I did HRBlock federal e-file for the $20 software, then e-filed through the LA State e-file site for free using the documents HRBlock gave me for Louisiana.
But like many others my tax situation isn't that complicated, yours may be different.

Before 2008, we used to charge for e-filing - I think it was $50. Then we realized that e-filing actually makes things easier on us, so we stopped charging.
Our software does charge us to e-file. Depending on the return, sometimes we have an unlimited software license for a flat fee, and sometimes we have to pay by the return. These fees are in addition to the license fees for the software itself. So yes, a preparer is charged to e-file a return.
We charge a flat "processing fee" that is in addition to our time costs for every return.
Our costs for e-filing are a lot less than $139. At that price, a preparer doesn't want to e-file a return for some reason. However, we are supposed to, and if we don't we are supposed to include a waiver form. By you refusing to pay that, we can file a waiver saying "taxpayer wants to paper file".

State is free this year.
The $35 processing fee goes away if you pay for it rather than take it out of your refund.

You would take the tax forms that they have completed and then fill out the required forms either through a tax software or directly through the IRS and your state.

They hide it in a contract at the end.

I've lost track of how many times a first-time client has asked me "can you just take your fee out of my refund"? This is before they even know what the fee is.
