I assume this should be basic knowledge but I am a child when it comes to car related issues such as title, registration, tags, etc. So go easy on me.

Moved back to Baton Rouge recently. Wife went to DMV to register her vehicle and they said it would cost $1500. I told her to walk out. We registered the car in the two prior states we lived in and it was nowhere near this cost.

Is this a Louisiana thing? Did we do something wrong? Did the dmv do something wrong? Am I just going to cough up $3000 (for both cars) as a cost of moving to Louisiana?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think you have to pay sales tax of the vehicle’s fair market value or something when you register a vehicle in Louisiana coming from out of state. Stupid I know.. but my in laws just dealt with this same issue coming from Mississippi.

You will pay sales tax on the value but you get a credit for any sales taxes paid in the prior state.
