Can I file Federally one way and State Another

You have to use the same status on both.

If it's not caught by your software and somehow goes through, in a couple of years, IRS and LDR will share info and it will come out then, and you will get a letter from LDR.

Where your wife works is not relevant, but if her domicile was moved to another state, such that she is no longer a resident of Louisiana... hmmm never seen that before.

I guess I would file an MFS LA return with a note describing the situation. Be prepared for LA to contact you at some point.

How did Louisiana handle it last year when the IRS was recognizing same sex joint returns, but I'm guessing Louisiana wasn't yet?
