A couple things to be aware of before just dumping into a random index fund.
1. Make sure it has plenty of trading volume. New funds or dwindling funds can get off track from the indexes they follow.
2. The more the herd follows the "be the market" approach, the easier it becomes to beat the market.
High quality mutual funds and strategic-beta ETFs are your friend. I'd personally find a low-cost brokerage firm with a solid reputation.
