I've done my own taxes via turbo tax for the last several years. I bought a house this year (first time homeowner) and was wondering if turbo tax is sufficient or if I should look into a CPA.

Turbo tax has been idiot proof, but didn't know if first time home taxes were difficult enough to require a CPA. Usually get my taxes done for about $100 with turbotax so don't know if I want to spend the extra for CPA if I can do it myself.

Thanks!

I kept using turbo tax after j bought my house: it is the one the actually told me I got the first time home buyers credit. I bought it from family but turbo tax spelled it out for me and my sister was not family according to the tax law

TURBO TAX. very simple to use. Until you get a shite full of investments and it gets complicated then go to a CPA.

Because you bought a home this year, you'll want a CPA to look at your situation. Any other year of home ownership and you may be able to perform the return on your own.

Any spouse, kids, supplemental income, or chance of taking itemized deductions and you'll definitely want a CPA to do it.

For reference, the lowest fee at my firm for a simple tax return is $150.

owning a home shouldn't require you to use a CPA

Why is turbotax costing you so much? I do mine for for our household and it is only like $40.

Between

loan origination fees
processing and underwriting fees
title insurance
home insurance
mortgage insurance
daily interest charges and mortgage interest
property taxes
and home improvements

buying any home (particularly a first home) usually has numerous effects on ones taxes.

Whether or not it is worth it to get it right on your tax return is another story, but usually it is.

Well, $100 between state, federal and the audit protection.

Just type the numbers in the boxes like your CPA's secretary would do.

It's not complicated for anyone with half a brain. If I were still working for my dad, I'd be completing this guy's return anyways.

Come on. The tax code is mind numbingly complex. If you've ever read any significant portion of it you could not deny this.

Turbo Tax works fine for millions of people, for millions of others it does not.

It isn't complex for someone itemizing deductions or applying credits related to buying a home.
