My neighbor has a 32ft Baja w/ twin 454s . Its always in the shop for something. He finally got a Bayliner so he could actually get out on the water more.

Hell... I almost want to give someone my seadoo for free because the maintenance is ridiculous

So why would you ever want to buy a boat?

Thats as good as having a next door neighbor with a pool.

I just did the same thing. - bought about a year earlier then planned due to a deal falling into my lap.

If you are sure on the make and the maintenance issues that could arrize and have done your homework on price, then jump on it if thats what you want.

This post only wanted loan info but when you included a few facts, that brought out the fever or itch busting squad...the itch or fever does not think things through, it only wants what it wants when it wants....I thank forums like this that have kept me from major mistakes...In our consumer driven economy, discontent is constantly stirred and delay of gratification is a joke...but good job on posting anyway.

In order of intelligence:

1. Don't buy a boat
2. Buy a boat with cash
3. If a deal falls in your lap and that's what you want, jump on it. Make damn sure that's what you want.

Im tired of going to the sand bar in a CC Offshore Cat or a Sea Pro that smells like chum every time the wind blows a certain way.

1. Yep I know but wanted one for a long time. I learn the hard way.
2. In a couple months Ill have the cash in hand but afraid the boat wont be. I do side work and I have a backlog thru the end of the year. This was the only reason I was considering the bank loan option in the OP.

What are the odds a boat of this caliber and price come up again in the next year?

Seems like the best time to buy a used boat would be in the winter.

Buying a boat will probably be the worst investment youll ever make.

If it feels good then go for it. People will tell you that you shouldn't finance and a boat is a bad investment blah blah.

You don't buy a boat as a financial investment. You buy it to have fun and enjoy yourself. You can't get time back with family and friends.

I personally enjoy fishing and being on the water every weekend with my family/ friends which is worth financing what you need to (within the parameters of what you can afford) to make that happen. Enjoy it

An 8k loan for 12 months @ 6.15% is going to run him a total of $270 in interest

Go buy your boat man

If he can pay off 8k in a year, then why does he have a credit card balance? It's not the $270, it's the $20k being sunk in to a 12 year old depreciating asset that scares most of us.

And he has friends with boats. I'd much rather buy the food/gas/beer, and be free to drink as much as I want without having to worry about driving, trailering, storing, and maintaining a boat.

We are already now into July, the boating season is more done than started, you'll have the entire amount in-hand by the end of Winter? They'll be another deal then, possibly better than the one you are looking at now, especially if you don't mind traveling to get the boat. Regardless of when you buy it, you will have expenses on a twelve year-old boat, motor and trailer as soon as you get it and start to use it. There will also be things on it that you want to change, that will take time and money.

I'd wait until next year. You can get used to your new used boat in the Spring and work out any kinks then in preparation for all next Summer.

That's just me. Everybody is different.

Good luck.

I don't need to read this thread. Has anyone else said NO? Find a friend who has a boat or charter one when you want to go out. Let those guys take the hit.

EDIT: If you could afford the upkeep on a boat, you wouldn't be thinking about taking a loan to buy it when you already owe on other debts. At least when you buy a car or truck with a loan, that hopefully gets you to work to make money to pay the loan off. The boat is likely just going to continue to cost you money as long as everything stays afloat.
